Godard Shorts on DVD: ECM

There is supposed to be a release of new(!) Godard short films from ECM. There is really little info yet, but from a "good" source i got the info that this is no joke! Sorry, i don't have more infos on this subject yet - but keep your eyes open and me posted!

postscriptum: concerning their tremendous audio releases, this could be a perfect platform for JLG - plus ECM / Eicher has been a good companion for years now ...

Do we know anything about English subs on this???

Edit: I just got this email, and then immediately ordered the DVD from amazon.fr:

The ECM-DVD JLG/Anne-Marie Miéville: "Four Short Films" has been sent to the press; official release is June 2006.

These four short films are: "De l'origine du XXIe siècle" (2000), "The Old Place" (1999), "Liberté et Patrie" (2002), and "Je vous salue, Sarajevo" (1993).

It is the first publication in a new DVD series by ECM, "ECM Cinema". The DVD "Four Short Films" [NTSC, Zone O], with subtitles in english and german, is issued with a 120-page hardbound book, incorporationg the complete text of JLGs and Anne-Marie Miéville's narrations in french, english and german, a (brilliant) essay by Michael Althen in german with french and english translations and more than 70 stills from these four films, in black and white and colour. (ISBN 3-00-018563-2/ 987-3-00-018563-2).

Ahh. I hadn't noticed the region discrepency because all I care about are the English subtitles (I've got a region-free player).

Just recieved an email from ECM - and yes, there will be english/german subtitles! The additional book will also be in the different languages. Release date for France will be 5. June, for Germany 29. June. It is said that the german price will be around 39â‚¬ so maybe amazon.fr made a little misstake with their 29â‚¬... could be a good choice.

I have been on a trip to Paris the last two weeks (though I unfortunately leave tomorrow) and I haven't been following this thread while while I have been here, so I hadn't realized this was to be released today and I happened to stumble by it at the Virgin Megastore on the Champs-Elysées this evening and couldn't resist buying it. The packaging is really wonderful. It looks just like a hardcover book and you wouldn't notice there is an accompanying DVD unless you opened the book and flipped through it as the DVD is attached to the back cover. The book contains multiple stills, the complete voice-overs from the films in French and English (not German as the email seems to indicate, not that it should affect many people on this forum), and the essay by Michael Althen in German, French, and English. The DVD is NTSC Region 0 with English and German subtitles and also contains a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. Something I can't appreciate as I only have my laptop with me, but I can't wait to watch this in 5.1 when I get home. If Gaumont actually gets around to releasing Histoire(s) du cinéma this should be a good year for finally getting some of Godard's video work on DVD.

I'm in the same boat. The Gaumont/Histoires thing has taught me patience with Godard, though. Once it gets here eventually (in the next 5 days, amazon.fr is you're reading), I'll be happy.

Are there any French vendors aside from Amazon.fr and fnac who will ship to the U.S.? I plan on ordering this soon but it would be nice to make sure I'm getting the best deal. The shipping and taxes are pretty harsh from both those I mentioned, although if there's nothing better I'll certainly bite the bullet and order.

alapage.com also ships to the US but their shipping costs are just as bad as those two. I always compare the three before buying anything.
