Does anyone know if/when Flowers of Shanghai will be added to the channel? I've been trying to find a news article (or a post on this forum) that might shed light as to why it isn't currently available. Does another streaming service hold the rights?

Criterion usually waits a few months between when one of its Janus-toured films debuts on disc and on the service. The Lincoln Center is also replaying its COVID NYFF which included Shanghai. It'll probably be on there next month.

The five Nikos Papatakis films start with Criterion and Janus logos, as does Kings of Pastry. The Phantom of the Monastery is a Film Foundation title and starts with the Janus logo only.

Very curious if Platform will be a new master. The restoration should've been completed ages ago, but I had expected it to premiere at a festival (e.g. Cannes, Venice, NYFF) and so far it hasn't. I have a sneaking suspicion that there might be censorship issues at work, in which case the safe play might be to forgo a high-profile debut and send it straight to the general public.

Hopefully Margaret is the DC (and opens with the Janus and CC logos). Really curious to see about A Royal Scandal's quality/logos- is it possible that this neglected gem is being primed for a physical release?

Unless the rights were reverted back to the producers, I doubt that it will open with either logo since it's a Fox title.

Hopefully my hope that After Hours will, after all, get a release isn't empty
Also is it possible for Criterion to release the excellent Smoke (now that it's on the Channel and they're releasing another Wayne Wang film)?

Lovers of experimental film should really jump on Harris' hard-to-see still/here. What a treat.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I remember thinking Smoke to be excellent as well- though I'm admittedly biased towards loving offbeat William Hurt perfs

Ha, I too love offbeat William Hurt perfs (and not-so-offbeat perfs — he's one of the most watchable actors, especially in his 80s period).
Blue in the Face is quite weak (save for one absolutely hilarious scene) but a perfect bonus film — slight, comparatively forgotten but a nice companion

Right there with you, Pavel, on all of that- except I recently tied up some loose 80s ends for Hurt and, although he gives some of my favorite 80s perfs ever, there are some real duds making it a mixed bag of a decade all in all

Awesome month. Excited for the (hopefully) new Platform restoration as well as the early Laura Poitras docs.

If CC release Smoke, I do hope they include its companion film Blue in the Face as a supplement.

Just noting that Criterion Channel announces a tribute to New York City with something like 50 movies (I stopped counting at 20)... and not one movie by Woody Allen. Sigh.

There are some real fun ones at that list, but I'm particularly glad God Told Me To got some love!

I am excited for Ciao! Manhattan as I have always gravitated towards Warhol/Factory Superstars, and Edie being the epitome of the superstar I am definitely excited. I am though disappointed in the lack of Woody Allen or even a mob film like Goodfellas or Once Upon a Time in America.
