It looks like there are going to be 4K releases of Unbreakable and Roger Rabbit this fall. Why they would do the former before Sixth Sense is perplexing to me but I’m glad to see what might be the first actual adult Disney movie to be released on the format regardless.

Roger Rabbit in 4K is extremely exciting news. Unbreakable is probably being fast-tracked because its two "sequels", Split and Glass, are already on the format.

I think Unbreakable has aged much better, and while The Sixth Sense was a cult favorite upon release and subsequent M. Night movies were less esteemed during theatrical runs, I struggle to find anyone I talk to about the auteur these days who cite that breakthrough Oscar-nominated movie first in the discussions. Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, Split, and even The Happening (for other reasons) are more closely linked with his name today, in my experience

If you count hybrid animations, we're still (and will always be) missing:

Victory Through Air Power
Song of the South
So Dear to My Heart (actually this one could happen)

When can we expect Ruthless People (1986)? I mean, saw it last week after many years and still a great black comedy. Made with very little money and was a huge hit and very well received by critics too.

Judge Reinhold selling speakers were the best scenes. :D

It’s one of the funniest mainstream comedies ever made, it definitely needs a release from someone. I assume since it’s rated R that it’s never coming from Disney direct though

Disney/Buena Vista Catalog Titles on Blu

Agreed. It made me laugh out loud in the theatre back in…what…’87….(?), and its shitty DVD made me laugh just as out loud when my wife and I revisited last year.

There's a certain group of Touchstone/Hollywood Pictures titles that Disney both refuses to license or release themselves. Kino would have loved to release Ruthless People, Stakeout, and some of these others when they had their Touchstone/Hollywood Pictures deal with Disney, but they were off limits for licensing.

Now that sure is odd. What is the reason for their refusal not to license then? :-k

”I hate her furniture.” Seconded, they sure were freaking ugly.

Melody Time has been on Disney plus, uncensored, since the service launched, but Make Mine Music was only ever censored on DVD, excited they're finally releasing these two! I would assume MMM is probably also going to appear on disney plus.

I may have seen MMM in elementary school, but it's probably the only classic disney feature I've never seen.

Interesting disclaimer included for Melody Time. Has Disney ever done this before in lieu of censorship/suppression?

Ironically their Blu copy of Make Mine Music is censored and excludes the feuding segment (as it did on DVD in the states-- the UK DVD was uncut)

I seem to remember Leonard Maltin providing introductions to a few cartoons on the Treasures DVDs addressing aspects that "hadn't aged well," but can't remember the specific titles. No recollection of labels or warnings like that, though.

They have similar warnings ahead of many titles on Disney+. I find that they go by so fast though that I’ve never been able to read one all the way to the end.

I saw somewhere that The Rescuers (one of my childhood favorites) had been edited for its home video release, but looking into it it seems that all that was done was the removal of a couple frames of non-animated female toplessness that some cheeky employee had initially snuck in?

Wildly ironic that I never heard of that one, while the Little Mermaid penis spire and the Lion King sex dust were gospel in my Disney-boycotting, Dobson-devout Southern Baptist home growing up.

Yeah, I definitely grew up hearing about those two. And ironically, I now boycott* Disney for entirely different reasons

*a boycott that obviously does not extend to buying Blu-rays from third-party sellers off of eBay

I was aware of all of these, as well as another Little Mermaid naughty bit involving a protrusion through the minister’s robe during the wedding scene that supposedly was his knee but many interpreted as an erection. This was visible on the original VHS release (with the penis spire on the cover) but was removed on all subsequent DVD and Blu-ray editions.
