Yeah, the Amarcord cover is kind of off. I have the same problem with the Heaven Can Wait cover...she's a talented artist, but whenever she paints women they end up looking like angry drag queens.

The Spirit of the Beehive definately looks great, can't wait for that one. There is definately some meatspin going on with that Amarcord cover but it is all right. Some pretty good covers, not letting the new designs intrude that much as the Six Moral Tales.

I can't decided if i like the new seven samurai cover or not, its certainly a lot more daring than the old, predictable cover.
I'm praying seven samurai (3 disc set) is a 3 disc digipack ala Battle of algiers rather than a clunky plastic 3 discer ala the Leopard.

EDIT: Or even better a 3 disc digipack ala Ugetsu or Fanny & Alex, which are the ultimate classiest and most beautiful packaging, IMO.

I've always thought that Criterion should have used the flag motif for the packaging for Seven Samurai. It's beautifully graphic, and much interesting choice than a still. I'm wonderfully impressed.

With the exception of Amacord, these covers give high hopes for the new line. Jigoku and Seven Samurai are both spot on! To avoid any misunderstandings - it's the cover for Amacord I don't like, the new logo etc. blends nicely!

Ditto... although, I think it's unlikely that they'll do a Leopard/Scenes from a Marriage type case. They haven't done one of those for a while. All of the 3 disc sets in the past year or so, as far as I can remember, were digipak... I assume Seven Samurai will be too.

The've got the same crappy Heaven Can Wait artist back for Amarcord.

That would be Caitlin Kuhwald. Who, apparently, likes writing poetry and drawing pictures of her friends. I wouldn't talk any more shit about her if I were you. She looks downright dangerous.

She looks much better (perhaps less hostile/dangerous) in her "Cushion" self-portrait (3rd link in the Paintings section).

I don't really know why, but I find her work fascinating simply because her images look so peculiar.

Her stuff also reminds me a little of Eric Chase Anderson. Maybe it's just because of her book cover for Ordinary People, with its Andersonian characters.

I've gone from kind of disliking the Heaven Can Wait cover to having a mild case of Caitlin Kuhwald Fever.

I think the latest batch of covers are doing a better job of accommodating the new logo, especially Seven Samurai, Beehive and Jigoku. On Amarcord it does look a bit like Pacman's going to eat that ship.
