According to The Digital Bits, Reds is a new 4K restoration.

It is indeed a new 4k restoration but it's approved by Vittorio Storaro. Isn't he the guy who changes the aspect ratios of films according to his liking and against the director's intent?

AFAIK, he's only done that to 2.35:1 films, not to 1.85:1/1.78:1 films, so I expect there shouldn't be any issue with the aspect ratio.

Barnyard (2006) on 1/25/22. The only thing I recall about this film's promo is that they inexplicably have cows voiced by male actors.

The Bad News Bears (2005) and Clockstoppers (2002) on 1/25/22 as well.

Why would someone want to pick it up when there’s a 4K release available in much of the rest of the world?

Very few people have UHD players.

To be fair to Ribs, the 4k release also has a Blu-ray reissue with the new master, and it's very well regarded.

True, but not everyone has a region free player and Ilm pretty sure that Blu-ray is region locked.

The Paramount's pretty damn cheap, too. Maybe it sucks, maybe it's perfectly fine. I'd like to know.

Blu-ray.com on Reds and Heaven Can Wait

Seeing shots of Reds that actually look great is like, breaking my mind, it's something I've been wanting to see redone for so, so long now and I really didn't think it would happen. These, to me, are two of the capital-G Greatest films and I can't believe they're just slipping out from the studio in very affordable editions with little fanfare

Can't believe it took so long, but at least it's finally coming out. This surely has to be the last "big" obvious film not out on Blu-ray, wonder what will supplant it in comment sections now

James Cameron is still waiting for the "28 hours" he needs to sign off on The Abyss and True Lies. A Spanish BD of the latter was released last year but it's apparently a bootleg.

Good call. It's absurd that a relatively recent big budget action adventure film as popular as True Lies isn't out yet

It is a bootleg, but it's a pressed BD50 not a BD-R, and it's easily the best quality the film has ever been available in on home video (basically equivalent to your average HD master circa 2005-2010). And it's very cheap. Until Cameron pulls his finger out it'll more than do (and who knows, any future legit release may turn out to be a disaster like the latest T2 release, in which case the bootleg will become even more worthwhile).

This is getting into areas that probably shouldn't be discussed here, but the transfer on the Spanish BD is allegedly a re-encode of a 36 GB fan restoration/regrade that's been freely available for over two years. The ethics of bootlegging in general is a bigger discussion, but I personally have a problem with companies that profit from work done by fans with no compensation involved.

I think the expanded soundtracks are being sold separately. And it’s very expensive.
Finally watched this last week, as it had been something of a blindspot considering my interests. I watched the directors cut and was thoroughly charmed. I was afraid there would have been some skeeviness considering the presence of groupies of a questionable age as the sort of Greek chorus but I think it felt respectful to their agency from Crowe’s perspective. To that end Kate Hudson is tremendous, as someone who hasn’t seen anything else she’s been in, it’s really no wonder this performance is still so fondly remembered.

Should I bother with the theatrical cut?

I think I've only seen the theatrical and liked it, so it's not bad by any means, though I don't know enough of the differences to determine whether or not you're getting anything worthwhile from that cut vs. the DC

La Dolce Vita arrives 08 February, with its own horrible cover art

is this Paramount's first time releasing it on home video themselves?

It's a bit tighter, but I think the longer version is preferable overall, with a more immersive feeling and better development of the side characters, especially Kate Hudson's. (And if you're wondering this specifically, I don't believe there is anything in the theatrical cut that's not in the DC.)

I haven’t seen the longer cut, but the theatrical is an all time favorite.
