According to the extensive extras on the DVD, the whole intention of BTVOTD was to satirize the way american movies were made, so I guess the moralizing tone of the finale was what they were after. Think Friday 13th: every character that sins/has sex has to die. But let's not forget the most important thing here -- Meyer is not preaching morals in his films, he is deconstructing our pre-conceived notions of what is wrong or right. He always commented about society in general using satire and that's why his films always worked on two main levels: intelectually and visually (estimulating both to varying degrees...Michael wrote:I finally saw Beyond the Valley of the Dolls this morning. Since this is my first Russ Meyer experience, I have a question about the whole "moralizing" finale. Is that typical of Russ Meyers films?

Yeah, me too. However, I've seen it on Ebay for $125 plus like $40 to ship. Anyone know where to get it cheaper? Or the cheapest place to get the individual discs?Myra Breckinridge wrote:You could always wait a few months and get it cheaper. It's a shame that no one seems to be trying to do these films right in any region. I've considered buying the Arrow editions, but I can never bring myself to actually do it because of my hope for better editions down the road. The R1 DVDs are one of the biggest ripoffs ever foisted on the moviebuying public, $40 for barebones discs that are straight transfers from VHS/laserdisc. I guess whoever owns Russ Meyer Films nowadays figures that it's not worth upgrading the quality if people are still shelling out their money.
Not that it would ever happen, but the second- and third-tier Meyer films would make great Eclipse boxsets.

Seven Minutes shouldn't be too hard to find on (crappy) bootleg. Maybe ioffer. The first half is great, including some dizzying editing, but then it gets a bit bogged down in the courtroom.
EDIT: you might be able to get it at www.subcin.com

Re: Russ Meyer
Can someone post a link to this Japanese set of Meyer movies that has been mentioned here? The Arrow set is on sale in the uk and before I go for that I'd like to make an informed decision. Are the Japs remastered and better? Etc etc

Re: Russ Meyer
I would imagine they are cut since Meyer was not afraid to show pubic hair.Westwood wrote:Thank you manicsounds, I assume that the quasi-complete collection is divived into those 3-goodlooking box sets?manicsounds wrote:There are a few boxes that are way overpriced....

At first I had a good laugh, then I realized you might mean that showing pubic hair in Japan is a total no-no and so these would probably be cut?zombeaner wrote:I would imagine they are cut since Meyer was not afraid to show pubic hair.Westwood wrote:Thank you manicsounds, I assume that the quasi-complete collection is divived into those 3-goodlooking box sets?manicsounds wrote:There are a few boxes that are way overpriced....

More detail than you probably wanted, but pubic hair is generally OK if the actual genitalia aren't clearly visible. That said, there isn't really any consistency as to what gets censored and what doesn't (the official guidelines only say that pubic hair and genitalia should be avoided "in principle").Westwood wrote:At first I had a good laugh, then I realized you might mean that showing pubic hair in Japan is a total no-no and so these would probably be cut?

I have been taping them from tv whenever they get shown and caught some showing a penis, not shocked
They should really be released in pristine condition, like so many others...

Well, I would say that even if they are uncut in Japan, I know that the extras on the UK set are well worth watching.

Thank you very much for this one. I guess this puts the nail in the coffin for the Jap sets.

It's good that these things come out in the open; potential customers should be aware precisely what they're paying for!More detail than you probably wanted, but pubic hair is generally OK if the actual genitalia aren't clearly visible.
