Love has been in my kevyip for years; finally got around to watching it tonight.

Remarkable film. I don't really have much to add to the praise heaped upon this release over a decade ago, but just from a personal perspective, the emotional labor undertaken by Mari Töröcsik's character is staggering. I was feeling grumpy about having to walk my dogs this afternoon (#firstworldproblems), but after watching Love, now I'm feeling like a jerk.

upgrade coming September!!! that's a deep upgrade from the SR catalog.

I wonder if A Long Weekend in Pest and Buda could be paired with it...but I won't ask for too much

Something quite funny to me about how Second Run just kind of quietly goes about having an unexpected blu-ray upgrade of one of the likely greatest films ever made and one of the absolute highlights of their catalog announced without fanfare six to eight weeks before it comes out. Just tremendous! Should be a humongous upgrade from spine number… 4.

I was just boxing up some older Second Run DVDs for extra shelf space yesterday and was thinking Love would be an incredible upgrade. Such good news.

I do love their random announcements where they just casually update their site. I check the "coming soon" list almost every day..

they've been really big on the upgrades this year, and for some pretty major titles (all of their films seem major to me, though). I've never seen this one, or any of Makk's films though they've been on my list...so the timing couldn't be any better.

really curious what we'll see in the way of extras, they usually add at least something

yes, ryannichols7, Károly Makk's commentary is in Hungarian and subtitled in English. We strongly felt that to hear Mr Makk speak about his masterpiece was something we just had to make available.
and thank you for your response to our LOVE cover.

I watched this film last week on the advice of those in the thread bump but have little to add to zedz' rave on the last page. It indeed felt like a more temporally-grounding Mirror that focused more pointedly on platonic intimacy of a few palpable people, rather than an individual elusive search for connection in that film. Very excited to see the outstanding photography in HD

absolutely thrilled by that, thank you! I don't mind subtitled commentaries at all, as you say I think its important to have the directors on there talking about their films, no matter if they're another language or a super short execrpt

I'm saving my first viewing of this film for the new disc, can't wait

"A sterling new edition from a 4K restoration, now looking better than it likely has since its opening night. [...]
The Second Run Blu-ray offers an exceptional showcase for this film... the a/v presentation here is impeccable. The Hungarian LPCM 2.0 mono track is in mint condition (with optional English subtitles, improved since the DVD), and the clarity and black levels here are terrific."

A really great release, although I was a bit underwhelmed by the restoration, which seems to have used grain management (DNR) too liberally for my taste. Less grain reduction would have been preferable here...

Desperately hungry for more Makk I went out to watch his English language effort Lily in Love, which at least is relatively easy to see, and was just bowled all over again by his ability to show love without needing romance. The way he dances with these two and twirls their emotions against their actions. I was just left even more desperately hungry for all of Makk’s films still in existence.

How I must now wish for something to instigate a major revival of his (and much of Hungary’s) films.

For some reason, I was reading the 1974 Cannes programme, and Makk's film 'Cats Play' was in competition and was also Oscar nominated for Best Foreign Film. His next film, A Very Moral Night, also played in competition at Cannes a few years later. I wonder if these are on the Second Run radar?

They're certainly on our radar, but not on our schedule yet.

I’m assuming the scenes in which there is a very slight shift between a white palette of a slight reddish hue and one of a slight greenish hue is in the elements? These were not throughout, mind you. But in a few places it was noticeable. I thought at first my projector was acting up.
