Yes, because releasing special edition DVD boxsets at Christmastime is unique to LOTR and has nothing to do with one of the biggest shopping months of the year.godardslave wrote:Its kinda funny how blatantly and unashamedly they are following the LOTR business model, right down to the 4 dvd SE just before Christmas.

So, that's why Criterion put him into their collection. He's cutting edge.Narshty wrote:To be fair, the 4-disc director's cut of Pearl Harbor beat them all. I like to think that Pearl Harbor's 4 disc dvd (which I purchased, because It was the first I'd seen with 4 discs for one film.) was released by Bay to spite criterion for not continuing to release his films. I mean, he calls it a directors cut and it's less than a minute longer. Although, It does have the best easter egg I've ever seen, which contains hartnett and affleck recreating the animal crackers scene from armageddon.Fletch F. I don't think Bay had much say in the matter. That was back in the day when Buena Vista was really pushing their Vista Series - an obvious rip-off of Criterion that ended up with a whopping 8 titles, 4 of them Shyamalan films. Since BV could now give Bay the Criterion-level treatment he couldn't get before, why bother to license the film out?SncDthMnky wrote:I like to think that Pearl Harbor's 4 disc dvd (which I purchased, because It was the first I'd seen with 4 discs for one film.) was released by Bay to spite criterion for not continuing to release his films.
Also, the director's cut of Pearl Harbor not only added a small amount of footage, but also removed some blurring effects in the gorier hospital sequences that were added in order to get a PG-13.
But to get us back on the topic (such as it is), I too join in the general jeering of films that were already far too long to begin with being released in extended editions.
