Re: Francis Ford Coppola
Not least because of the possibility that he could be the first filmmaker to win the Palme d’Or three times.
And the mere fact that he’s already done it twice should make him a shoo-in, unless the film is terrible.

Re: Trailers for Upcoming Films
Oh man, I can already hear the pushback against how Sky Captain-y the special effects look. Love it, can't wait!

It strongly echoes Rumble Fish. Amazingdomino harvey wrote: Sat May 04, 2024 6:08 pm Oh man, I can already hear the pushback against how Sky Captain-y the special effects look. Love it, can't wait!

Really like the Vertigo homage as well. Psyched about this.

Re: Megalopolis (Francis Ford Coppola, 2024)
I can't muster up much enthusiasm for this, especially since the trailer came out and how on the nose the "fall of the Roman Empire" allusions are, down to the risible CGI statues which come to life. I'm afraid that rather than being a return to form, this will join Coppola's other 21st century bizarro misfires.

Reviews are, as expected, rather divided, but the Deadline review by Damon Wise has me quite excited for it - including the negative points.

The more I hear about it, the more I'm reminded of Julie Taymor's 1999 adaptation of Titus Andronicus.

That can only be a good thing. (Though nothing could ever match Anthony Hopkins flouncing around in a chef’s toque.)

I can see myself doing a Babylon - Megalopolis party night in the future. What brave Director will name a film after a city in 2025?

I saw this last month at an IMAX theatre. Coppola certainly packs a lot into the film and the actors generally seem to be having the time of their lives. I'm on the fence about the film but this is definitely worth another viewing.

Getting a commercial release on September 27th in North America. Interesting to note that his nephew Robert Schwartzman’s company is handling the rollout in collaboration with Lionsgate.

That's a bad SNL spoof. Or a spoof of an SNL spoof.

Yes, reminiscent of Annette's brand of weird. I'm even more excited than before

That’s so fun and I love Lionsgate’s way of opening to say we don’t care about the reviews.

Any of these quotes could have come from the critic in other reviews, TV appearances, &c. Them not being in an online review is not evidence, at least not yet

If they made up the quotes, that's kind of messy/brilliant

Re: Megalopolis (Francis Ford Coppola, 2024)
Ridiculous that no one, not even an intern, took five minutes to double-check on what apparently ChatGPT spat out before releasing it. Sounds like Coppola had nothing to do with the trailer based on their apology, which makes it even lamer— was so much better when it seemed like he’d been stewing on these slights for decades

Yeah, but has anyone stewed on a slight from Rex Reed for even a few minutes?domino harvey wrote: Wed Aug 21, 2024 10:18 pm Ridiculous that no one, not even an intern, took five minutes to double-check on what apparently ChatGPT spat out before releasing it. Re: Megalopolis (Francis Ford Coppola, 2024)
It would be funnier if they knew they were fake and simply didn't give a shit, but I guess that would still get some kind of blowback. If they honestly were looking for "real" quotes, then it really is half-assed and lazy because they're definitely out there. The first two Godfather films got their share of negative reviews from respected and established critics, as did Apocalypse Now and certainly anything Coppola did after 1980. It really is intern-level work to find such quotes, but maybe I overestimated their marketing department's abilities?
