I don't know if people already know about this but I recently bought a dvd from dvdr.cz of Diamonds of the Night (Démanty noci) by Jan NÄ›mec. It also includes Konkurs (Audition) by MiloÅ¡ Forman.
Here is a link to it:

It appears to be advertised on the site as a magazine with a free dvd of the 2 films so I expected to receive a magazine in czech with a dvd stuck to the front. What I actually received was a sealed dvd with full artwork and proper plastic cover - the real deal. I don't quite understand this but I'm very happy with it. The transfers are very good and both films have english subtitles. In addition it only cost me about £10 including postage.
Bloody marvellous.
I believe the same people have also released Az prijde kocour by Vojtech Jasny but I can't find it on the dvdr.cz website.
EDIT: I am going to type Nemec here because otherwise if you do a search for nemec without the accent thingy this post won't show up in your search results. It seems with search engines nemec is not the same as Němec with the accent.

Diamonds of the Night is very powerful and unique film; great to see a legit DVD. I have a poor VHS-to-DVD-R copy. I have used that site before and their service is excellent. I am very tempted to order the Czech DVD, but Second Sight may very well be working on their own edition with extras.
We greatly appreciate you pointing out this release, vogler. Good man!
BTW, folks: 245 Czech Kroners is currently $10 USA, €9 Euros or £6 UK.

Shouldn't come as a surprise. Statistically, the U.S. economy has always performed better when a Democrat occupies the White House. Which is why I've never understood why so many corporate types consistently vote Republican -- I guess tax cuts are just too big a temptation to pass up.tavernier wrote:WTF! Sorry! That's hopelessly off-topic, isn't it?

Fantastic news - I only have a terrible quality copy of this film with no subtitles so I can't wait for this release. As a huge fan of the czech new wave this will be one of my favourite dvds of all time. Thanks Bikey. =D>Bikey wrote:we will be releasing Jan Nemec's 'Party and the Guests' at some point in the near(ish) future.
Any chance of some Chytilova at any point in the future?

Despite the Facets version being almost unwatchable - white subs, audio hiss and poor contrast typical of a 60s theatrical print - the excellence of the film still comes through. A decent release is deserved of this almost unknown master of the Czech New Wave.
REPORT is a film that exists in its own universe. The events/action is realistic enough, the characters are more than believable, yet something is not quite palpable. Is this world Nemec creates pure symbolism?
Well Bikey that's 4 films I am now anticipating [MARKETA, REPORT & 2 classic Jancsos]. I hope thay will be out before December.

All the information at the link about this being a magazine with free dvd has now gone and it is advertised as a proper dvd release. The price has also gone up from 245 Czech Kroners to 434. Perhaps they ran out of the original magazine version that I ordered and sent me the new dvd release instead, in which case I got a damn good bargain.vogler wrote:It appears to be advertised on the site as a magazine with a free dvd of the 2 films so I expected to receive a magazine in czech with a dvd stuck to the front.
