Re: UHD Special Editions and Packaging
Ironically, “What’s in the Box?” 4K for Se7en is no more. Today, Warner cancelled the previously announced collector’s edition of the film - seemingly upon David Fincher’s request.
Here’s their full statement:
"Dear Customers,
Thank you for your patience whilst we’ve developed our 4K restoration plans for David Fincher’s Seven. We’re pleased to announce that the restoration will finally be released in early 2025, with a brand-new 4K scan carefully overseen by Fincher.
We will be releasing two products: a Digipak and a Steelbook release, both developed and designed by the director himself. These products will replace the previously announced What’s in the Box and Ultimate Collector’s Edition versions.
Pre-order for the new products will go live in early November. Apologies again for the delay, and thank you for understanding. We can’t wait for you to experience Seven in more detail and depth than ever before."

There’s a rumor going around that Fincher was pretty appalled when he saw it and got it nixed.

It's a very plausible rumor, considering how the statement pretty much says "the original stuff got cancelled, and a new one, this time overseen by Fincher, will appear".

Thank god someone put their foot down and stopped one of those hideous sets.

From what I could remember, it was rumored that it was going to be one of those AI-upscaled releases (or at least smeared with DNR). Presumably Fincher saw the transfer and was horrified to the point he had it redone.
I recall there was a release of another film (I forgot which one it was) where the grain was kept at the director's request as opposed to applying grain reduction. (Update: It was the remaster of Michael Lindsay-Hogg's Let It Be, in contrast to Peter Jackson's DNR-bathed documentary The Beatles: Get Back)

If this is true, kudos to Fincher and Warner for doing the right thing and re-doing the transfer, although this makes me wonder who commissioned the use of AI á la Cameron in the first place. It had to be him, otherwise I’m sure Sheri Eisenberg and Warners wouldn’t have done a thing like that. Maybe fellow tech nerd Jim Cameron or someone in Fincher’s circle sang praises or he simply didn’t know / believe that there’s more than enough visual information in his original negative to gain natively for 4K if accessed and newly scanned. Like Cameron, Fincher already used Lowry’s processing for the previous Se7en masters which ended up on BD and therefore an apparent backtrack from all that special sauce would be quite the event.Captain Paranoia wrote: Fri Sep 20, 2024 8:15 pm From what I could remember, it was rumored that it was going to be one of those AI-upscaled releases (or at least smeared with DNR). The other film and director you may have meant is JFK. Oliver Stone specifically praised Duplitech for doing a faithful and filmic presentation as opposed to Platooning the film.

Kinda reminds me of the little openings on the Reservoir Dogs DVD but this isn’t worth like $60, maybe $40 at the most.
