It is now time for Jason Voorhees to boldly go where no serial killer has gone before in Jason X, a spectacular sci-fi twist on the Friday the 13th franchise brought to life by legendary special effects supervisor Jim Isaac (Gremlins, eXistenZ).

The year is 2455, humanity has left an overly polluted Earth for a new planet they’ve christened Earth II. A crew of scientists on an expedition to Earth I discover a research facility near Camp Crystal Lake where Jason Voorhees’ body has been cryogenically frozen. They decide to bring him back on their spaceship, but in doing so they seal their doom! As they depart once again for the furthest stars, the masked maniac awakens, ready to kill again!

With fan favourite Kane Hodder returning as Jason this time sporting a new space age look, and some of the most creative kills in all of slasherdom, Jason X is a rollicking blast from take-off to landing!

Going through that Shout! set was fairly painful, but the more I reflect on it the more I like this one, if only because it really leans into the absurd/stupid premise and goes all out. Plus it has maybe my second-favorite Cronenberg appearance, after To Die For. And despite the cheap budget this should look pretty good in 4K.

For more acting Cronenberg he has a couple of great collaborations with Don McKellar in Last Night and the short film Blue. And he was really good in an amusing 'new media reporter' role in the recent film Disappearance At Clifton Hill. Cronenberg appears in Jason X (as does Robert A. Silverman who appeared in Rabid, The Brood, Scanners, Naked Lunch and eXistenZ in a small but amusing cameo as the guy whose city the spaceship is going to, and through!) probably because the director James Isaac was a special effects technician who had worked on a number of Cronenberg's films.

On the "Joss Weedon-ified" more overtly sarcasically comic Jason X, in addition to the "Juicy" Cronenberg cameo at the beginning, there are two quotes that mean this film is worthwhile:
"He's screwed"
"This sucks on so many levels"

And of course the whole return to Camp Crystal Lake sequence, which finally manages to do the censored sleeping bag kill from Part VII properly! Plus weirdly this has almost the exact same ending as Alien: Resurrection!

I have a rather soft spot for this one, although admittedly that may have been at least in part because I had to watch all of its predecessors multiple times in the immediate run-up (I edited a fair number of the extras in the Shout box), and it was at least both different and halfway witty.

Although given when it was made, what are the chances of the many CGI shots being native 4K resolution? Pretty slim, I'd say.

Yes, I’d rank this as one of the better entries for the same reason/method— watching all of these extremely similar and mostly bad films in short order makes something a little more ambitious and quirky like this stand out. It’s a goofy movie, but it knows that and has fun with it. This is absolutely not a recommendation to watch this or any of these movies though!
