extremely clever extra. I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to when I watched it for our 70s project, will probably pick up and sell off my slipcovered Kino edition

I didn't care much for this the only time I ever watched it (on TCM) but many of my friends swear by it so I've been meaning to revisit. Glad I waited!

I think the KL 4K is great, but this is definitely one to pick up for anyone who doesn't already own it. Just a wonderful action film with great NYC atmosphere, full and rich performances from the principal and supporting cast, and suspenseful unpredictability sewn throughout

In the 1990s (Denmark), one of Clint Eastwood and Walter Matthau would always be on TV on weekend evenings (there were two channels).

So I've seen this a few times.

(Redford, Paul Newman and/or Dustin Hoffman when it had to be slightly more upscale).

I think this film's reputation has been steadily climbing over the past few decades. I can't remember where I first learned about it - possibly an old Roger Ebert review but possibly one of those articles in Entertainment Weekly that would review like a dozen films or albums etc. of various age in one go, assigning them all a letter grade - but for a while I felt like few people knew about it until a friend of mine took a screenwriting class in college and their professor showed the opening scenes to them. Apparently he focused on the film's depiction of characters - not just Walter Matthau's but all the bit characters too. That's when I finally checked it out and it feels like the kind of movie that was very common as mainstream entertainment in the 1970s, usually characterized by a grimy and unglamorous look, filled to the brim with offbeat personalities, and usually carried by a pervasive tone of disillusionment and cynicism, portrayed in a way that's almost synonymous with intelligence or wariness (often personified by the central character too).

Anyway, I think others here hold it in much higher regard than me but I do think it's a good movie and always found it entertaining.

Walter Matthau’s reaction to the black cop being someone of authority always makes me smile. This movie doesn’t let up with shades of nuance. And of course that hilarious ending…eagerly awaiting this gem.
