I don’t know what happened to Eureka Master of Cinema series. It used to be the Criterion of the UK.

one only needs to see what the Masters of Cinema release was for the previous month to know they've still got it sometimescrimlaw wrote: Tue Jul 23, 2024 9:01 pm I don’t know what happened to Eureka Master of Cinema series. It used to be the Criterion of the UK.

Nothing wrong with Masters of Cinema. If you're referring to Future Cops, that's part of their Eureka Classics line (not MoC).crimlaw wrote: Tue Jul 23, 2024 9:01 pm I don’t know what happened to Eureka Master of Cinema series. It used to be the Criterion of the UK.
And somewhat ironically, Criterion themselves haven't exactly been avoiding the Hong Kong titles (The Herioc Trio/Exectioners being their latest release in that vein).

Eurkea have struck a DEFA deal. Initially seems to be focussing on the sci-fi films, but hope they explore the wider catalogue.

This is great news! The catalogue has gotten a shoddy treatment on DVD--and very little Blu-ray. I look forward to seeing some of these films properly contextualized and presented in the best possible quality.TMDaines wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 11:26 am Eurkea have struck a DEFA deal. I imagine they're starting off with the two films being released by Deaf Crocodile.

You might say Criterion used to be the Criterion of the US.crimlaw wrote: Tue Jul 23, 2024 9:01 pm I don’t know what happened to Eureka Master of Cinema series. It used to be the Criterion of the UK.
FWIW, both have been doing fine in the last few years, IMO.

Re: MoC Forthcoming, Wishlist, and Random Speculation
Just a heads-up: it was mentioned to me a couple of months ago by Eureka there would be a box set of four Westerns for MoC mid-2025. My guess after all these CCC and DEFA announcements is that it'll quite likely be a box set of Osterns (most likely Karl May adaptations, or possibly DEFA Indianerfilme such as The Sons of Great Bear).

Re: MoC Forthcoming, Wishlist, and Random Speculation
Lex Barker and Pierre Brice made over half a dozen films as the Old Shatterhand and Winnetou pair (respectively), certainly enough films for more than one boxed set. The best of which seem to be the ones directed by Harold Reinl, represented by both the Mabuse set and the krimi set.

Reinl’s Der Schatz im Silbersee is an incredible western (one of the most entertaining and overstuffed exemplars of the genre, truly), I always wanted to see the other films but I don’t think the Blus had subs other than for the first film

Spines 304 through 319 are all dedicated to post-Weimar German films, and we know there's more to come. I'm rather liking this trend, and I hope it keeps up.

Upgrades to The Old Dark House and possibly High Noon (?!) incoming. The latter a surprise as it's Paramount, but maybe there's finally some movement with both Arrow and them now announcing Paramount titles again.

I wonder if Eureka is going to do do any of the Rialto Edgar Wallace films soon. We have some of CCC's krimis, but not the more famous Rialto ones.

I'm honestly dreading what it could be, especially when elsewhere people are guessing it's for more French extremity or Ichi The Killer or any of the Hongkong CAT III stuff that 88 hasn't already covered.

The 60s Fantomas films with Louis de Funes are coming soon, as they have been passed by the BBFC for Eureka

Re: MoC Forthcoming, Wishlist, and Random Speculation
They teased Thursday's announcements with four hashtags (= MoC spines?). The 60s Fantomas is probably going to be one of those.

They've announced a five-film box set of "carefully curated adaptations of beloved folk and fairy tales -- from the DEFA archives" without revealing the specific titles. Overlap with Deaf Crocodile?

Re: MoC Forthcoming, Wishlist, and Random Speculation
I have to imagine so, the carefully curated part especially seems to suggest at least some of these titles will be ported from the Deaf Crocodile set as Dennis has mentioned on the Discord that they complied through dozens of titles in order to determine which titles would be good to release. Plus, the fact that they mentioned the same number of titles as the number in the Deaf Crocodile set seems to suggest that it might just be a joint release for both territories.andyli wrote: Thu Mar 19, 2026 4:15 pm They've announced a five-film box set of "carefully curated adaptations of beloved folk and fairy tales -- from the DEFA archives" without revealing the specific titles. Edit: The teaser image is actually from The Singing, Ringing Tree so presumably there will be at one distinct title, but I still believe there might be a good amount of overlap between the two sets.

Re: MoC Forthcoming, Wishlist, and Random Speculation
DEFA made scores of fairy tale films, I'd hope that there's no overlap.
