Hah, I independtly sat down and watch A Sense of History (Mike Leigh) this morning hoping it would be the tenth film I needed. Very good, short, black comedy that gets really quite grim.

The film lives in a simpler time.

John Cope wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 11:58 pm I do love the Kiarostami film. It's among my favorites of his and I consider it a kind of career peak high point. It could easily be a contender for #1 for me though I have to give Erice the edge.
My sentiments exactly. I saw The Quince Tree Sun last year for the first time in two decades plus. It was really a formative filmic experience for me back in the day, and if anything it held up even better than I remembered. Life, art, death...hope I myself hang on the branch long enough for the blu ray to finally emerge one day.

Speaking of discs, I've failed to get the Monteiro set in time to see The Last Dive. Next time.

And speaking of next time: too late to encourage watches for this list, but worth noting two not-unrelated films from Senegal both came out in 1992: Sembene's Guelwaar and Mambety's Hyenas. Not the best-known films of theirs but we're arguably talking career high points here, too.

Guelwaar's burial mix-up drama takes in a huge number of themes, many of them relating to how different strata of Senegalese society do (or don't) function alongside one another. The narrative structure is quietly quite powerful, it's great to look at, and also very funny when it wants to be. You don't get many imams speaking as this one does...

Plot wise, Hyenas sticks quite closely to its source, the Durrenmatt play The Visit. No bad thing. And on top of that you get a load of contemporary concerns about Senegal, consumerism, foreign aid (also a Guelwaar speciality), and the whole thing is shot and framed beautifully.

Funny that the Palme d'or and Gold Lion winners that year share a petty 32nd place in the list.

Those highest votes (5 for Zhang, 6 for August) were mine. I wonder if many people here have even seen the August ... or maybe even the Zhang.

Qiu Ju is the only Zhang film of that era I've not seen. Never been able to find it.

another busy month for me, but my work schedule has finally changed and I should be able to participate for 1993. I don't like this trend of big ticket Hollywood movies winning every year so far, maybe we can see Blue or Red break that trend soon? ironically the only new movie I was able to get to was Light Sleeper, which I enjoyed but honestly need to spend a little more time with, it perplexed me a little but I enjoyed it a lot more than The Comfort of Strangers. and how was Wayne's World left an orphan, really

01 Rebels of the Neon God
02 Life, and Nothing More
03 The Player
04 The Long Day Closes
05 Husbands and Wives
06 The Quince Tree Sun
07 Light Sleeper
08 The Crying Game
09 La Vie de Bohème
10 A Sense of History
11 Untitled (For Marilyn)
12 Wayne's World
13 U2: Even Better Than the Real Thing

I'm pretty surprised to hear anybody characterize Fire Walk With Me as a "big ticket Hollywood" movie. Still, I do agree with your sentiments. I would love to see Vale Abraão top the'93 list but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: The 1992 Mini-List

Thanks swo, great list as always.

I've been taking a different approach with these than past projects. Instead of binging beforehand, I've been adding movies to my watchlist as we go, specifically any title I haven't seen that lands in the top 10 of the mini-lists. I've added 11 from 1990-92, a number that will grow with each passing month. Got some viewing to do by end of 90s project.

I think Blue has a strong chance of topping 1993. And Wayne's World was my orphan, haha. You un-orphaned it, so good work! Glad you liked Light Sleeper. I recall putting it in my Top 10.

Swo, this is probably way too late, but a pretty great movie, Passed Away by Charlie Peters, seems to be missing from the list of eligible titles. I was shocked to realize I had been completely oblivious to its existence until recently, even though a bunch of my favorite actors of the era were in it.
