Sadly, unlike their DVD set, the French Blu-ray set for this is sans subs, and I trust Our Criterion not at all to release anything but Adieu Philippine on physical disc. Maybe Criterion didn't buy UK rights and Arrow can put out a complete set?

The Rozier restorations are coming to London next month.

Does anyone know when his films last screened in the UK? I assume Adieu Philippine must have done at some point, but can't find much evidence from the recent past. And as for Orouët and Maine Ocean...

Adieu Philippine was written about by the UK critics, but they like other English-speakers only saw it in 1963 at the international Cinema-Verite conference in Lyon. I don’t know if it ever got theatrical distribution in the UK, however. Blue Jeans played alongside Andre Cayette’s Le passage du Rhin in the UK in 1960. Don’t know about any of the more recent films

Interesting, thank you. Adieu Philippine was classified by the BBFC in 1965, so I guess it received some kind of theatrical distribution then.

I naively assumed there would have been a mini-retro at some point this century. Perhaps his erstwhile obscurity was greater than I realised. Anyway, happy to finally get to see these on the big screen.

Tom Milne reviewed it in the November 1965 Monthly Film Bulletin. Given its UK distributor (Contemporary) it most likely played in arthouses - the Academy on Oxford Street or the Cameo-Poly (now the Regent Street Cinema) would be good bets, but you'd have to check cinema listings to confirm that. It also had TV showings in 1968 and 1969.

The film was available in the UK streaming via Mubi last year, which is how I saw it.

Was Adieu Philippine hinted at for Criterion? That's the one I would like replaced most of all, because one of the reels has an unfortunate heavy pixelation on the Potemkine DVDs. Would love the lot though....it's one of my favorite collections.

Janus have acquired at least US rights to all of Rozier's films
