Did you order the single disc? Or the new 3-disc?tavernier wrote:My "new" disc was all new: new logo, new copyright date on the back, new date of the film on left side of front cover....in other words, the new packaging.

Maybe the single disc has the new art, but the 3-disc has the old art. I don't know why this would be, but it's certainly the case with mine. And I've just opened mine and viewed a few scenes--it's definitely the new version in an anamorphic transfer...
I don't have a digital camera, or I'd post pictures of the box art.
As I said previously, the outside box for the three keep cases is a but more squared and solid, but otherwise (in terms of art) it's exactly the same as the old version. No new logo or anything. Not in digipak. Plastic, armary cases inside a larger plastic case--as with the older version.

This has the potential to be a major cock-up, especially with the old version still technically in print and actually on-sale in many brick and morter stores. I'll be pretty irritated if I get an old copy of Brazil with a new sticker, or even if all the new 3-disc sets turn out to have the old artwork.

I emailed Matt Lipson las week and he told that the new Brazil 3 disk set was going to be a digipak. Your case is stange, since I ordered all the Sep 5 titles from DVDPlanet and received a shipping confirmation for all of them except the new Brazil 3 disc set.
Edit: How's the disk art? Does it has the new logo?

Cardboard + glue + plastic. Think about it

My suggestion is that you change brands and not rub them so tightly together.

The disc art is identical--no new logo, as I've stated in my previous posts.gigimonagas wrote:I emailed Matt Lipson las week and he told that the new Brazil 3 disk set was going to be a digipak. Either Matt Lipson was wrong, or he doesn't know what digipak is, or it's as arsonfilms suggests... a "cock-up." I hope it's not the latter of the three.

I've always preferred clear amarays to black, so if they move to that I'll be happy. For what it's worth, their Phantom of Liberty disc looks great in a clear case (I, for one reason or another (I won't blame the cat... ok I will blame the cat) had to switch a few, etc).
Digipacks and clear cases from here on, it looks like. Worse things could happen. But if we're paying big money for cardboard, it should be sturdier.

Got my first copy (pre-crunched of course) of Six Moral Tales yesterday... have another copy arriving any day from a different source, slim chance it will not arrive pre-crunched, but you never know. Perhaps somewhere along the line I will get a good one...
Not really looking forward to the yet even more cardboard that's inbound as of yesterday (Samurai, Amarcord, Playtime), although perhaps one or two will arrive okay.
Keep 'em coming Criterion, I'll just keep returning/swapping them until I get sick of doing that (getting fairly close...), then I'll stop buying them altogether.

Doubt it.
Also think the cookie-cutter redesign is pretty lame; don't think that's going to make much of a difference either.
More likely all these changes are to get some of their customers to come back. (Picture-boxing anyone?)
They've already milked their market. Perhaps they should try cutting their prices instead, rather than using pretty cardboard boxes and overly thick books/booklets and whatever else they're going to try next to get a few extra sales.
Just watch when they finally come out with their $50 HD-DVDs or BlueRays...

This post makes no sense. Criterion puts far more monetary investment into producing non-new release dvds than the even the biggest Hollywood conglomerates (Warners, Fox, Paramount, etc)-- all because their business model works perfectly. They just released a box set that includes a 200 page novel. Does that sound like a DVD company that's in trouble?fdm wrote:Doubt it.

I agree, I am willing to pay more for an excellent criterion HD release. I'm guessing 44.95 (maybe 49.95) MSRP for the discs, working out to 30 (35 max) USD for the first HD criterion titles with etailer discounts. The cost of the discs is really the only reason to raise the price, since they've been mastering films in HD for a lot of titles and selling them at an MSRP at 30 and 40$ a disc based on extras.
Now, if they start getting into HD extras, then I can see them raising the costs a bit, but If the discounted price ever becomes 50$ for a single movie, I'll go herzog on my shoe.

Now I have two pre-damaged copies of Six Moral Tales to return/swap/whatever. Post office was particularly brutal with the second package (crunched in two directions), the first one was 'merely' a nasty crunched corner. Both online stores were pretty f-ink stupid with how they packed them. I'll split the difference between the three (Criterion being the third).
Anyway, I'm done toying with you for now... my never-ending disgust with cardboard persists. You can all go back into denial mode and pretend that there is no problem. Seems like the thing to do these days.
