Re: Spawn
Hated this film when I saw it in the theaters, even as a comic book reader of long standing. But I'm tickled to see Arrow got an interview with Happy Walters, so he can discuss his trilogy of rap-rock-electronica crossovers (Judgment Night, Spawn & Blade II).

Re: Spawn
I absolutely despised it as well. One of the worst films I saw in the theater. Honestly, I couldn't stand Leguizamo, either. I remember advertising pushing how much CGI the film had as well, like it was a good thing, and it didn't help the CGI was godawful, even for the time. If I recall, that one demon's mouth didn't even move when it talked. It seems to have its fans, though, which I will never understand.

I was a teenage Todd McFarlane fanboy, and this was even then, absolutely irredeemably horrible.cdnchris wrote: Thu Jul 24, 2025 12:00 am I absolutely despised it as well. Re: Spawn
I thought you were all exaggerating as to how bad this was but nope, it truly is that horrendous. Are there really people who are fans of this, and why is Arrow wasting their time releasing this?

Re: Spawn
Ebert somehow gave this 3 1/2 stars out of four

Re: Spawn
I remember this being baffling at the time as well. There is a spirited Siskel v Ebert clip on this one, where Ebert compares the film to the work of Hieronymus Bosch, raising Siskel's eyebrows to the rafters. I think it's important to note that this movie was awful in its own timeline. It is not a case of it being dated. It was/is and will always be dreadful in pretty much every facet.

Re: Spawn
Matt Kowalewski has done a timely "What Happened?" video on Spawn
(I kinda want to see the 2022 CGI Marmaduke movie with J.K. Simmons now, which the director of Spawn co-directed with one of the directors of An American Tale: Fievel Goes West!)

Re: Spawn
Saw this in theaters…I don’t remember it being the worst film I have ever saw, but I remember enough to know it wasn’t very good apart from Leguizamo‘s Clown.
Gotta say, I always thought Spawn was an intriguing character, but like most Image comics-the writing was awful.

Re: Spawn
Image has certainly improved in that regard. The only one of their titles from the initial 2-3 years that I really hold in high esteem is The Maxx, and William Messner-Loeb did an exemplary job of making Sam Kieth’s messy ideas compelling and imbuing them with great dialogue. Then he was gone for the final stretch of issues, and it became borderline incomprehensiblebearcuborg wrote: Sun Oct 19, 2025 9:29 pm Saw this in theaters…I don’t remember it being the worst film I have ever saw, but I remember enough to know it wasn’t very good apart from Leguizamo‘s Clown.
