Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a bigger hit, and that hasn’t had a 4K, either. It was Disney’s highest-grossing live action film until 1996

Tron (1982) and Tron: Legacy (2010) 4K UHD steelbook releases on 9/16, the latest in the "we purposely make these scarce to drive pre-order sales and so we never have to discount them" series.

Will we ever see a 4K release of The Color Of Money?

I don’t think it’s ever gotten a Scorsese-approved restoration. The Academy Museum showed a new 35mm print earlier this year, but I don’t believe it was sourced from a 4K. Looks gorgeous, though

Kotaku reports a leak suggesting Disney may be restoring the original theatrical cuts of first Star Wars trilogy for physical release.

Never thought Lucas would let this happen. I'm all for the originals

He has no control over them anymore so what he says doesn’t matter to them.

Unless the terms of the deal dictated that the orignal versions couldn't be released.

Isn’t Lucas one of Disney’s biggest shareholders? I’d say he has a say!

If true, my bet is on Disney knowing they need to try and win back some of the old school fan base they lost by throwing them a bone.

With this trickle of Fox titles getting UHD upgrades but nothing prior to The Sound of Music makes me think that 40s and 50s Fox titles will be largely ignored and never see the light of day unless they start licensing them out. Which is a major disappointment because a film like the beautiful The Grapes of Wrath would look spectacular on that format. And there are others. Even a licensing agreement with Kino would be welcomed at this point even though they are shoddy on their technicals

That, and the 50th anniversary of the original Star Wars looming barely a year-and-a-half from now. They'd undo DECADES worth of fanboy disgruntlement if they just gave us the completely unsullied OT in theaters and on disc.

Anyone that thinks decades of disgruntlement can be erased with a single disc release hasn't read our UHD thread!

I missed this news but it looks like Alice in Wonderland (1951) was released on 4K last week. So maybe the hopes of getting more of the Disney back catalog out on 4K are not completely dead...

I'm not a Disney lunatic, but the studio's HD treatment of their classics have been pretty shit honestly. I won't dive into all the specifics, but my few favorites on BD were pretty heavily updated concerning aspect ratio and digital scrubbing. It seems like they're up to their usual nonsense with the 4Ks. Just dipping into the currently available catalogue, Snow White has now lost the original mono that was actually on the BD. I think I might stick with what I've cobbled together from DVDs and BDs unless there is something really compelling that comes along.

I haven't looked at the 4Ks of Snow White and Cinderella first-hand--even though I own both--but I was under the impression that these showed marked improvement over the previous Blu-ray editions, with restored grain and color grading that was more accurate to the original film prints. It is a pity that they dropped the mono track for Snow White though.

Correct, the new restorations of Snow White and Cinderella are nothing like the old Blu-rays, which were terrible in retrospect. They also did wonderful new versions of The Black Cauldron and The Sword in the Stone, though these have so far remained exclusive to Disney+.

So Alice makes 5, and that one does at least have the mono retained.

I also understand they are both visual improvements (not shocking considering the BDs are ~15 years old). But that they can't do a definitive version just angers me. Are parents really buying 4Ks for their kids to watch in 2026? I would have thought that the audience for this at this point is 100% the animation nerds.

I've also not seen the new Disney+ Sword in the Stone, but I assume it retains the masked for widescreen image losing a lot of the original art drawn and painted by animators.
