Schrader’s commentary for the original WB DVD would’ve been nice

No HDR or Dolby Vision seems odd for this film which I haven't seen but screenshots of the BD and film stills looked really striking. I guess Schrader didn't think HDR was necessary.

It’ll hopefully be like the new Godzilla release or The Virgin Suicides where they didn’t do a HDR grade but protected the slightly wider color gamut (P3) of the master in a HDR container. That would be perfectly fine in getting a bit more highlight detail and some of the shadows without a full-on HDR grade. But that’s just hopeful speculation. It seems the restoration was done at a time when Lee Kline & co. were still anti-HDR.

According to Paul Schrader (on Facebook), Mishima has never been shown publicly in Japan, and will have its first public showing at the upcoming Tokyo International Film Festival.

I thought it had been screened in Japan, albeit edited. Mishima’s widow really took umbrage with it

It wasn't just Mishima's widow that took umbrage, right wing groups made active threats and the film was straight up withdrawn in Japan. Mishima's wife also interfered with the production itself, forbidding the use of Forbidden Colors which involves a gay man marrying a woman for societal reasons. Make of that what you will.

Schrader went on to post an AI photo of himself and Mishima, so that's where we're at here

I wonder if the future holds a pattern of the artists I consider to be the more fraudulent and more slenderly/dubiously talented being the very ones who are the most open to/embracing of AI in the arts...?

He could’ve posted a picture of his brother, who actually met Mishima and spoke Japanese
