PLOT OF FEAR
(Paolo Cavara, 1976, 95 mins)
Release date: 20 October 2025
Limited Edition 4K UHD (World premiere)

Pre-order the 4K UHD here and the standard Blu-ray here.
(They're UK-only releases, but region-free.)

Corinne Cléry (Hitch-Hike), Michele Placido (The Pyjama Girl Case), Tom Skerritt (Alien), and Eli Wallach (The Lineup) star in Plot of Fear (E tanta paura), a dark and perverse thriller from director Paolo Cavara (Mondo Cane, The Black Belly of the Tarantula).

Inspector Lomenzo (Placido) investigates a series of bizarre murders, each linked by the fact that pages from the German children’s book Shock-Headed Peter have been left at the scene of the crime. As the bodies pile up, Lomenzo is guided by a model (Cléry) and a surveillance expert (Wallach) to a decadent club frequented by the rich and powerful...

Co-written by long-time Federico Fellini collaborator Bernadino Zapponi (who also co-wrote Dario Argento’s Deep Red), and incorporating a specially produced erotic animation by Francesco Maurizio Guido aka Gibba (best-known for his comic cartoon King Dick), Plot of Fear is a disturbing and engrossing giallo.

Mondo Digital:
Finally in 2025, Indicator added the film to its sterling roster of Raro title upgrades with separate UHD and Blu-ray editions in the U.K. featuring a tremendously upgraded new scan from the original negative. Here you get much more detail, healthier colors (especially with the HDR10-compatible Dolby Vision on the UHD), and a substantial extra amount of image info on all four sides. The English and Italian tracks are here in LPCM 1.0 mono, both sounding solid, with optional and improved English-translated or SDH subtitle options.
Having spent a lot of time with both versions, I'd agree with his assessment that it plays much better in Italian, despite the presence of Eli Wallach, Tom Skerritt, and John Steiner—it's a very Italian film, and Michele Placido is very much the lead character.

Looks like a fantastic upgrade for giallo fans — the restoration details and all the new interviews make this release way more substantial than a typical 4K reissue. Cavara’s work doesn’t get enough attention, so it’s great to see Plot of Fear getting this kind of treatment. Definitely one I’m adding to the list.
