I hope everyone has watched, and is voting for, The Winslow Boy. I’m glad Mamet didn’t wind up just being another Branagh adapting his favorite plays, but this one is such a perfect fit to his obsession with games and the truth. Also this is probably Pidgeon’s best performance.

Not sure how I missed seeing this wasn't on the list, but if you can add Morita's Keiho - one of my two favorite movies of 1999 - I'll, of course, vote for it. So sad no one else is missing it.

Keiho is an exceptionally well-configured detective-story/psycho-thriller/courtroom-drama, part Hillside Stranglers, part Hamlet, with all the pictorial, editorial, and absurdist genius of, well, a top Morita film. [No one compares.] The narrative is complex and the side characters are hilarious. Quiet Detective Nagoshi (the always unforgettable Kishibe Ittoku) never stops chewing his gum and even spits, loudly, in close-up; seems crazier than the suspected psychopath he tracks, absurdly counting down ("5, 4, 3, ,2, 1") then clapping his hands in his suspect's face during interrogations. The state prosecutor constantly mumbles, his brow furrowed, his eyes, mole-like, rarely open. The aging court psychiatrist's young assistant is named Kafuka. Etc. etc.
