IN A BASEMENT NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM

In 2003, the same year as Oldboy and Memories of Murder, Korean cinema welcomed its most audacious debut: Jang Joon-hwan’s delirious Save the Green Planet! Manic yet focused, outrageous yet grounded, this genre-defying smorgasbord was destined to become South Korea’s ultimate cult classic.

The world is in grave danger but no one seems to realise it. Thankfully, Byeong-gu (Shin Ha-kyun, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) is our salvation. To everyone else, Chairman Kang (Baek Yoon-sik, The President’s Last Bang) is a pillar of society, but Byeong-gu sees him for who he really is: an alien from the Andromedan galaxy. Byeong-gu’s only course of action is clear: kidnap the chairman and extract the truth via torture. With his tightrope-walking girlfriend by his side and city cops on his heels, he must use any means necessary to prove himself to the world and save us before it’s too late.

Boldly blending sci-fi, horror, comedy, procedural, and social commentary, Save the Green Planet! is the gift that keeps on giving. Returning to the home video market after over two decades with an electrifying new director-approved 4K transfer, this tale of conspiracy wrestling with reality beams down just when we need it the most.

I'm so happy I didn't watch the HD version circulating in backchannels! It did strike me as coming from a recent restoration, hence my hesitation to watch it, but I never expected Arrow to bring it out on 4K UHD.
As for the film itself, few people whose opinions I trust actually consider this inferior to Lanthimos' version which is unusual for foreign films that receive English-language remakes, yet everything I've seen from this has intrigued me so far. Look forward to checking it out with Arrow's definitive release.

IMDB ratings give Bugonia the edge (7.6 vs 7.1), however when I saw it in the theater I did not find it better than my memory of watching Save The Green Planet! on dvd when it came out. I will definitely be picking this up on UHD (but not Bugonia) as I have been waiting for a blu-ray for a while. Is the extra blu-ray exclusive to the limited edition? From the copy here it looks like there is a short doc on his short 2001 Imagine, but not the short itself, which is an early version of the film. That would be disappointing if true.

If I'm reading correctly the film itself is only getting at 4K release with special features on the Blu Ray.

Disappointing as I prefer to have a choice or better still the option of a dual 4K/Blu Ray release.
