Wow, those are wildly different.
While I prefer the coloring and aspect ration for the box set, I think the image is actually duller and less sharp than the stand a lone release.
Much more detail in the standalone release. You can see it in the jackets and face of the ones closest to the camera and the machine on the wall that the one guy is facing.

I think that might just be the way these particular screenshots were posted. The consensus, even by those who questioned the color, was that there was a very substantial upgrade in detail for the box set version (the source for the upcoming 4K). I don't own the original BFI or Criterion to compare.omegadirective wrote: Thu Dec 11, 2025 6:53 pm I think the image is actually duller and less sharp than the stand a lone release.

For what it's worth, Criterion confirmed to me that the new Blu will be at a higher bitrate than the box release due to the added space of not having the extras included on the same disc. Whether this will result in an appreciable difference in quality for the viewer, who can say? Obviously the 4K will be the one to get, but for those like me who don't have the capability to play 4K discs at the present time, it's something to consider. Since it's my favorite film of all time or close to it, I suppose I'll be future proofing and buying both anyway.

Am I assuming correctly that the bonus disc in the 4K only release is a regular Region A Blu-ray disc?
UPDATE: I confirmed this independently. It's a BD-50 maxing out at 1080p for all features on board. Just unable to verify the region coding.

Am I imagining things or are those Carlotta screen caps better looking than Criterion’s 4k? I.e., less yellow and more blue. Certainly exquisite looking!

I wouldn't take those as direct captures of the master.
