Re: Megalopolis (Francis Ford Coppola, 2024)
Coppola was trying very hard at the start of 2024 to sell the version of the film that was released to distributors. Wouldn’t surprise me if he cut out stuff in an attempt to make the film as short as he thought it could be with an eye to adding it back later

Re: Megalopolis (Francis Ford Coppola, 2024)
Last month, Coppola admitted that he initially wanted “Megalopolis” to be “weirder” and that he was working on a new cut with additional material, including dream sequences.
The above quote from the "World of Reel" story implies that Coppola deliberately "tamed" the film for the release edit, logically to appeal to a broader audience. Given that the current version has found no appeal among a broad audience, I can imagine Coppola thinking he might as well go back to his original "weirder" plan. And, yes, both versions should be considered "director's cuts".

Does a $75M box office bomb cause one to do such things?

When one spent $120 million of one's own money to make it....yes.

Producer Fred Roos’ various Megalopolis scripts sold at auction a few weeks ago. There is one draft from 2001 or so that has been online for ages, but I’d love to compare the different iterations
