I will actually concede that point. Radiance's cover uses the same color and the same image, but with a shadowy Fernando Rey looking over Pinal's shoulder, which I think captures the predatory nature of his character perfectly and thus captures the spirit of the film even more.
I know Sister Hyde said that cover's usage of pink was coincidental, but I personally felt it was perfect, both as tribute and cause the color actually does suit the film. Buñuel used pink for the key art for his three final films too, no reason he wouldn't have for Viridiana

and I agree that Criterion's cover totally misreads the tone of the movie. I'll be skipping their upcoming 4K outright - superfluous to own alongside the Radiance I think

Not sure why I spent 45 minutes on this since the end result is a bit botched, but if any of you want, 20 years later, to print this hi-res recreation of the cover and slip it on your copy

The basic Pinal image could make a really good cover. They've done worse I think. PS the wacky C is a downgrade from before.
