Horrified to announce that this'll be a day one purchase for me, despite the fact that the second movie is an absolutely useless toss-in. The first is really a unique piece of work and about as good as it could've come out - to date, probably the best 'video game movie' ever made.

I saw this a bunch as a kid because a good friend was a huge fan. But even tho’ I was a huge martial arts movie fan, I never had any fondness for this one. The movie suffers from a number of key cast members having no fighting ability to speak of, and the general inability of American directors and editors to construct a comprehensible fight scene. Coming to this from Hong Kong movies does Mortal Kombat no favours. But the Cage/Scorpion fight in the underworld is decent, easily the best fight in the film, and the Goro animatronic remains impressive even now.
I have no memory of the second one aside from the “Too bad YOU…shall die!” meme.
Going to agree with Sausage. I know so many people in my age group who swear the first is "one of the good ones" for video game adaptations. I can only chock this up to happy fuzzy memories as this was shown endlessly on cable tv in the 90s, I guess the non-gorey Mortal Kombat payed off to basically make easily digestible for cable tv sponsers and audiences.
In an era where countless 90s Hong Kong martial film basically blow it out of the water, I'm in no rush to return. I can at least give it credit that its at least better than the complete mess both Street Fighter live action films are.
Well, I mean when your competition during the same period was the Street Fighter film with Kylie and Raul Julia; and the Double Dragon film, it makes sense that Mortal Kombat would be the winner out of that competition! Although really the big winner of the 1994-5 group of beat-em-up game adaptations was not any of the live action films, but the anime adaptation of Street Fighter II (which sets a high bar for the upcoming live action Street Fighter film coming out this year to try to clear)
I mostly just remember that this 'island tournament' plot is basically lifted straight from Enter The Dragon (and/or The Man With The Golden Gun) with a bit of supernatural stuff for good measure. And that this is Paul W.S. Anderson doing his characteristic thing and adding a very 90s dance-rave remix of the main theme (which was perhaps more jarring when he went on to do a similar thing for Event Horizon!)
