Just watched Fruhauf‘s Exposed and was totally floored. Masterful in every way, especially the sound design: layers of whispers slowly build in intensity and volume as rectangles of light infiltrate the looped found footage. It’s only 9 minutes—easy to squeeze in before the deadline.

Fruhauf is the best, and I think he only gets better over time. Really excited to see his new work whenever it gets released

I‘m impressed by his range. Most experimentalists have a signature style or method. Many of Fruhauf‘s films could be mistaken for the works of other filmmakers—they’re that dissimilar.

Also, there's a 2001 Japanese medium-length doc by Sato Makoto called "Hanako" that's pretty great - about a severely autistic girl in an art class. If Mr S.W.O. 17 could add that, that'd be great.

Also missing from the list of eligibles is Bonello's The Pornographer, which derives most of its fun from Jean-Pierre Leaud's performance of the pissy, art-minded eponymous filmmaker and his meticulous "blocking" of the actors' "action".

I'm a little surprised how 9 of my 10 had at least one other voter. I think that's the most in any mini-list for me so far.

Interesting list! I wonder how different it would look if everyone who voted had seen every film in the top 50. I have only seen about 50%. I’m pretty sure at least some of the ones I haven’t seen would make my list. Obviously not all. My list only had 14 films on it. I have seen plenty more from 2001, but none that struck me as deserving to be voted for (including some that ranked on this top 50 list).

Glad someone else voted for Sex and Lucía. Unfortunately it was the cap on Medem's genius run from the 90s, and I don't think he's been very consistent since then, but it looks like he released something last year and will this year too, so we'll see!
