Not to put a damper on any expectations, but december is traditionally not a very strong month for Criterion.

But isn't The Third Man also expected this month?

It's really not a re-release, right?

I'll wait for the MoC Grey Gardens...the other one has my interest, but I don't think I'm going to be blindly buying.

I guess the Beales of Grey Gardens being packaged with the original GG release shoots the whole consecutive spine number thing to hell, with the exception of The 400 Blows/Doinel Boxset.

I don't see anything that says they'll be re-packaged. This new release is a new film as I understand it.

Well, the new Grey Gardens set includes both films, if that's what "re-packaged" means. The Beales of Grey Gardens is also being released seperately for el cheapo (twenty bucks), likely for those who already own the old GG disc.

Well, I'm thinking 400 Blows actually did the shooting to hell -- now it's really just another occurrence, inn't it?

Criterion's got their typo again "1971" on the cover of Symbiopsychotaxiplams.

I guess its a good thing that I only want one release in the remaining three months, makes it easier on the wallet.

I just got my replacement Rohmer box, and I was surprised to discover that the new box fits perfectly inside the old box. It was obviously designed with this in mind, because the fit is just right. The box within a box effect makes the set a little classier looking, and it also makes it sturdier. Now the question is whether all the new sets will come with one box or two. If not, then Criterion has turned a minor faux pas into a rare privilege, an early holiday present (if you will) for all those who spent their money early. That, or the whole thing's just another accident.

Lipson told me that it would be coming "around November." This was a couple of days after the November announcements had been made. I'm wondering now if perhaps it's just a new UPC, a re-promotion through Image to tie-in with Fallen Idol, or something boring like that.

This came up earlier in some other context, but it seems to me the only time the numbering system would really get screwed is if a box set (as opposed to an unnumbered "collector's set") of reissues were involved, because the box (which requires its own number) would have a number completely out of whack with its contents - e.g. if the Samurai trilogy were reissued as a lavish new box set with a bonus disc of extras. The Doinel issue was a minor hiccup (only one out of six spine numbers was awry).

The solution they seem to be going with in this case is adding The Beales as an (unnumbered) bonus disc to Grey Gardens. Thus Grey Gardens becomes a simple, box-less 2-disc reissue. The separate release of The Beales (primarily available as a service to their core customer base, I guess - maybe even in response to the premature whines emanating from this very board?), being a separate release, requires its own spine number, so voila!

It makes sense that they are offering the separate release of Beales as a service to those of us who bought the first release of GG. I guess they really had no choice but to do the 2-disc GG and the separate release, it's just those damn spine numbers and that pesky OCD...

Anyhow, I'm really hoping they do a perty new digipak for the 2-discer.

On the CC website:

"The first shipment of Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales included a slipcase that was sized incorrectly. The problem has been fixed—please contact us at [email protected] to receive your properly sized replacement slipcase."

Should also read: "...unless you live outside the US, in which case we won't even bother to answer your email."

I have not received an email or a package yet. I emailed them the day they posted the announcement.
