I'll Remind You of Everything: The Films of Mike Mills

Image

The legacies we inherit, and the ones we pass on, form the heart of writer-director Mike Mills's family portraits, inspired by his own experience. Both personal and panoramic, the films collected here—Beginners, 20th Century Women, and C'mon C'mon—set their stories of parents and children against the backdrop of a changing America, from the 1970s to the present. Anchored by performances of depth and wit from the likes of Christopher Plummer, Ewan McGregor, Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig, Elle Fanning, Joaquin Phoenix, and Gaby Hoffmann, these three films compose a mosaic of Mills's own life, from boyhood to fatherhood, and of the people, places, music, and memories that marked him along the way.

DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

• New 4K digital masters of Beginners and 20th Century Women, supervised and approved by director Mike Mills, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks

• In the 4K UHD edition: Three 4K UHD discs of the films presented in Dolby Vision HDR and three Blu-rays with the films and special features

The shorts alone make this a must-buy, even if the titles themselves are a (triple) double dip

Oh my godddddd, I’ve dreamt about maybe one-third of this but this is unbelievable. And yeah, what a great selection of short-form work to sweeten the deal (even if I’d add another music video or ten), I Am Easy To Find in particular is better than two of the main features.

I'm probably the only one here, but I would have preferred much more of his music videos. Air's is already on disc & Psycho Killer is readily available in at least HD online. Not sure if it's rights or materials that prevent more from being included, but for me it would have made me more inclined to consider buying. At the same time, I don't disagree that this is an impressive package for fans.

As stated, you’re not the only one. Mills was going to be the next subject of the Directors Label series before the second wave of titles underperformed and I’ve spent much time fantasizing about what that disc would’ve looked like. Shame this couldn’t/doesn’t include some of my favorites of his videos (Everything But the Girl’s “Temperamental”, Pond’s “Spokes”, Les Rhythmes Digitales’ “Sometimes” I think are the most representative of the artist he becomes) or Paperboys or even some of his commercials, but at least it sounds like the booklet interview will cover some of what’s missing.

Beginners and 20th Century Women are phenomenal films, high up on the list of the best of their respective years. Still haven’t seen Cmon Cmon though! And not including Thumbsucker is value added, I assure you

Air’s “Kelly Watch the Stars” is the video of his that I wish was here

As said by someone on here before (maybe MichaelB?), commercials and music videos are expensive to clear the rights to.

Well, if you give me some suggestions for the key titles, I could maybe create a bespoke "Director's Label"-style Mike Mills centric algo-rhythm month just for the forum! :)

My favorite Mike Mills music video and my favorite Mike Mills music video.

[I just realized the bizarre coincidence of that second video starting with an LED screen that says "C'mon C'mon"]

So the Director's Label series from Palm Pictures was more doable because it was a division of Island Records? (Not sure how many of the included music videos are actually from Universal Music Group/Seagram's, but I'm sure some are not) I would think that from those releases on directors might have started making arrangements in their contracts that state they have the right to include the work in any compilation or retrospective of their work.

C’mon C’mon I unfortunately don’t think is anywhere near the level of the other two though many disagree, It’s hard to watch it and not wish to be with Gaby Hoffmann a lot more of the time (I’m told her and Scoot McNairy is a very accurate depiction of a household with a manic parent). It is definitely better than Thumbsucker which even Mills has sounded a little embarrassed about in hindsight. It’s not terrible but so constrained within what were already musty indie-quirk cliches. It’s the starriest cast he’s yet directed but somehow Vince Vaughn is one of the few served particularly well by it.

This is also a fave but I wonder if there might not be hesitation to include that in light of Mills and Miranda July getting divorced (amicably it seems, having not read July’s most recent book, but still).

I haven't seen Thumbsucker since it came out, but I didn't hate it. It's definitely all over the place narratively. At the time, I thought Keanu Reeves' dentist's transformation as he rotates through various philosophies was hysterical, especially in the end when he's nihilistic, smoking butts while performing his job. And yes, Vaughn delivers a surprisingly tempered performance, which stuck out amongst the rest

This has been the most exciting release for me in a while, because although I was previously familiar with some of the films, I hadn't made the connection between them. I love his character driven tone/aesthetic and can't wait to dig into this.

Really wish this was available in Canada more readily because this is easily my most-wanted pickup for this upcoming month-long sale. Can't help but lament that Thumbsucker is not included, but I do love 20th Century Women more than enough to get the entire box set.
