I hadn't noticed this was an option, and placed two separate orders from VS and Mélusine. I contacted them, and they emailed back within 5 minutes and are fixing this and refunding me the shipping I had paid on the Mélusine order. Great customer service!

One disappointing thing about Faust is that it only has the Czech-language option, not Andrew Sachs’ wonderful English-language dub, which is how I (and I assume most people out of Czechia) first experienced the film. In this instance, it’s not so much of a case where an original language has been chosen, as I believe both dubs were produced simultaneously – there is no original Czech audio as such.

I wonder if they contacted MUBI outside of the US. The announcement from when they purchased the rights says
MUBI, the global streaming service, production company, and film distributor announced today that they have acquired Radu Jude’s “Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World,” including all rights in the United States plus streaming rights in Canada, Germany, India, Turkey, Latin America, and the Netherlands.
I would think that if a disc were going to come out it would have been announced by now, but it took years for Bad Luck Banging to be announced so, in the words of the late Rev. Jesse Jackson: "keep hope alive!"

Well damn, wish I'd seen this earlier, but I've already ordered it. I had a $10 off Vonegar Syndrome deal in the Shop app (so if you have the Shop app, check), so if I end up hating them and selling the set I'm not going to be out too much.

Is that the English-language track on the Athanor release?

Yep, that’s the one! I had to hang on to my BFI Alice Blu-ray though as the Athanor disc for that one is Czech-language only.

Although the English dub for Alice is terrible, so it wouldn’t have been much of a loss.

The English track for Faust, on the other hand, is a virtuoso marvel, and by far the best viewing option unless you actually understand Czech; it’s not just Andrew Sachs’ extraordinary performance(s) but also the quotations from the various sources that inspired the film, such as Christopher Marlowe.

I have the Athanor disc, and might buy this one anyway for the Adrian Martin commentary, but if it doesn’t have the English track it’s a major disappointment.

John Cope wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 8:45 pm Overjoyed to see Liebestraum at long last finally receive a Blu release. One of my favorite films, no hyperbole. One of the most beautiful movies ever made, no hyperbole. I have been waiting for literally years, almost even decades for a Blu release of this (also no hyperbole) as the benefit it will receive from that is almost immeasurable as is the boost it will assuredly and deservedly receive to its existing reputation. I kind of hate the art they are using if that is what they are going with but the release itself is unmissable.
I certainly agree with you John Cope and this edition got an immediate pick up from me as well, to replace my old VHS edition from its Moviedrome screening. I really like Timecode and Miss Julie, but Liebestraum may be my favourite Mike Figgis film, mixing his seductive sense of erotic jazziness together with a kind of Lynchian dreaminess that factors both into the spaced out performances and the entire liminal space of the old hotel with its hidden past to uncover, and its architect main character exploring the way that ghosts of historical events and the spaces within which they occurred are closely entwined; and the sense of demolition being another form of death for something else to arise in its place. Also, whilst he is not playing the showiest character, I kind of love that Bill Pullman is in here years before he would end up in Lost Highway (and this was made around the same time that Pamela Gidley played the Teresa Banks character, aka the pre-Laura Palmer doppleganger laid on the coroner's table from the opening of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me).

It seems one of the titles will be Brewster McCloud. It will be interesting to know what the other title will be.
May – two releases: the world UHD debut of an early film from one of America’s most important, and controversial, filmmakers; and the world UHD debut of an eccentric entry in the career of one of America’s most prolific auteurs

Whoops, I missed that since I was paying more attention at the part that was bolded. It definitely fits the second clue more (though selfishly I am hoping it's for a different film since I'm not that much of a fan of Brewster).

There were rumours that Satô’s Naked Blood would be getting announced for an UHD release by one of VS’s labels in May too, fingers crossed it’s true!

has any other label done a 4K upgrade of a title that Warner Archive put out on Bluray yet aside from Criterion and evidently now VS? what am I forgetting?

I also do not like Brewster McCloud at all despite usually being an Altman fan. and I like Houston too so the fact that it's a giant lead balloon to me is disappointing

Co-sign. It sux. I'd love to read Doran William Cannon's original script, though, he sounds like an......interesting figure haha

After all, Altman loved pissing away what were said to be very brilliant original screenplays.

Well, I love it and am a firm believer that even Altman’s worst work is far superior to most films. Brewster isn’t even close to his worst and speaks to Altman’s sense of experimentation and his need to take risks by following up his career altering hit with a film covered in birdshit.

It’s long out of print, but I recommend anyone look up the paperback tie-in to Brewster written by a MASH superfan than Altman invited to document his next production.

It’s absolutely top 5 Altman for me, too

I’ve read that book. Altman and Jordan Cronenweth really clashed a lot. You can clearly tell which scenes he shot (most notably the Astrodome finale). The film had a 70mm blowup print struck for its premiere at said venue, which makes it the only Altman film to get the 70mm treatment besides Short Cuts

What’s the likelihood Soderbergh’s box set is with VS? His newsletter mentioned it being announced before the end of June, and being a limited edition run likely with someone distributing it. Is VS a likely home?
