The Chronology of Water

#1 Post by MichaelB »

From the latest press release:
27 April: THE CHRONOLOGY OF WATER on Blu-ray

Following its opening in UK cinemas on 6 February, we will release Kristen Stewart’s critically acclaimed directorial debut THE CHRONOLOGY OF WATER (2025) on Blu-ray. Based on Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir, the film is a portrait of a woman who, after an abusive childhood, escapes into competitive swimming, sexual experimentation, toxic relationships, and addiction, before finding her voice through writing. THE CHRONOLOGY OF WATER features a powerful and career best performance from Imogen Poots, with support from Thora Birch, Earl Cave, Jim Belushi and Kim Gordon.

Got my copy of this yesterday and watched it last night.

Sensational film. Probably the best directorial debut from 2025 that I've seen. I didn't know anything about the film prior to purchasing/watching it other than it was Kristen Stewart's debut and premiered as Cannes last year in Un Certain Regard.

I understand that the BFI are getting more picky with what get a physical media release but I'm so glad they released this on disc - an amazing viewing experience.

I remember seeing the trailer for it in my local cineplex last Nov.-Dec., but I don't recall it ever coming. If it did, it came & went so fast that I missed it like so many films seem to do these days.

The film has only had festival screenings in Australia. To my knowledge it has no local distribution. It screened at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (which has been known as the Mardi Gras Film Festival since the early 1990s but I prefer the old name and that is what I call it) in February and I was planning on seeing it but when I saw that the BFI was releasing the film I decided to wait for this release.

Glad I did because I would have purchased it anyway.

It opened in twenty-seven cinemas on 6 February, going by the BFI's box-office spreadsheet and made £35,907, which is not that bad an average per screen. It was number 28 that weekend. I can't say how much it did after that, as the BFI don't track non-UK productions or coproductions if they're not in the top fifteen or a new release.

The reason why I remember it standing out is because I first saw the trailer at a suburban chain theater with 9 screens, the I saw it again at an indie arthouse theater in the city. In searching I noticed it played the indie arthouse theater the first week in January, but I don't think it played anywhere else afterward.

Apologies: I forgot to post final specs when they were revealed:
THE CHRONOLOGY OF WATER
A film by Kristen Stewart
Starring Imogen Poots

A journey through the sensuous and the sensual, Oscar-nominated actor Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut chronicles Lidia Yuknavitch’s life as she experiences and processes childhood abuse, first love, addiction and grief, led by a raw and magnetic performance from Imogen Poots (The Father, Green Room, Vivarium). The cast also includes Jim Belushi, Thora Birch, Charlie Carrick, Susannah Flood, Esmé Creed-Miles, Earl Cave, Kim Gordon, Tom Sturridge and Michael Epp.

Adapted by Stewart from the acclaimed memoir by Yuknavitch, The Chronology of Water is a poetic and unflinching exploration of identity, self-discovery and resilience, brought vividly to life through Stewart’s assured directorial vision.
