I wasn't expecting Michael to get a rousing reception, and I'm not surprised his diehard fans are proclaiming it as some kind of masterpiece, but I am surprised to see Owen Gleiberman and Questlove lavishing so much praise on it while brushing aside the elephant in the room.

Supposedly there are like 2 hours of footage laying about focusing on the later years that was cut. I think a fun project with any of these dreadfully boring music biopics would be a yin/yang two parter. Part 1 (Art) is a fawning hagiography focusing on why we love them. Part 2 (Artist) is a ruthless hit-piece exposing their vanity and misdeeds.

And in-between, there be Wayanses.

Oh boy...these guys have done everything in power to make me forget that at one point In Living Color was pretty great, and very likely overtook SNL as the sketch comedy show to watch for a stretch. Ah the 90's...so much wasted potential.

Regardless, that is a bit of marketing genius to time the release after Michael's release and have that trailer play before it.

I missed the trailer for Animal Farm, wasn't aware of it at all. My son came into my office a few minutes ago and told me I had to watch it with this huge grin on his face because he knew what my reaction was going to be.

What. In. The. Actual. Fuck?? There's no way that's real. But apparently it is.

This is looking terrific. Bad Boy Bubby as the preacher is fun to see. Causeway are the gold standard for Aussies right now. They've got a few films in the works that I'm looking forward to including the Kiwi joint The Weed Eaters

We now have the Brad Jones and Doug Walker reaction to the film, which is making me never want to see the film, but is still fun to hear secondhand accounts of! R&B, Boxer living to narrate the film, a Babe style pig protagonist (aren't even the child pigs in the story representatives of the offspring of the insulated and corrupt ruling class? The kind of "Zone of Interest"-type of family?), "Na Po-Po", the film getting to the actual ending of the book half an hour before it really ends, a shoehorned in love story, a rap number and a literal countdown timer over the end credits(?) leading to a QR code asking for an impulsive audience reaction to the film(?!?). If those reports are correct, that doesn't sound particularly Orwellian. Or rather, Orwellian in all the ways you would not want it to be.

I mean, if even Doug Walker (who notoriously completely missed the point of Pink Floyd: The Wall's political content in his Nostalgia Critic video) is riffing on how bad it is, this cannot be good.

The Animal Farm thing is getting worse, if the Nerdrotic video is correct, with a lot of bad stuff extending beyond the film itself, from talk of paid 'influencers' who appear not to have watched the film they have recommended; Angel Studios itself calling the audience "Pigs"; the block booking of empty theatres; and that QR code reaction request at the end of the film taking the audience member who did not like it to a website telling them that their opinion is wrong, and providing a PayPal link to atone for their wrongthink by buying more tickets!

EDIT: Although I have to admit that I'm morbidly looking forward to what must be the inevitable Video Brinquedo adaptation of Keep The Aspidistras Flying now.

As a retired animator, I have disliked Andy Serkis ever since he took credit for the work that the animators did on LOTR. Looking at the ugly character design, this looks like something made by a filmmaker who doesn't care about animation.
