if Criterion were doing it, I could see it. Radiance's audience is thankfully intelligent enough
but then again, Criterion released Murmur of the Heart and Kung Fu Master. the French gonna French

This is much more like Harold and Maude than Murmur of the Heart

Re: Convince Radiance to Release a Michel Deville Film
L'apprenti salaud was one of my introductory films to Deville and only made me want to taste more. It's not only his best film, but a perfect film for Radiance, right up the label's alley. The romance isn't even a thing, it's more of a companionship around being pranksters. This film has it all: Fast-paced gags, a rotating episodic narrative of comedic ideas, and amiable, quirky characters. It's an incredibly safe blind-buy - like if Allonsanfan was less political, faster, and funnier.

For the record, again, I love L’Apprenti Salaud, it’s easily my favorite of his work and also an introductory film for me too but I also know that it’s too divisive of a film to release as an inaugural Deville, especially because it might inadvertently steer people away from Deville. Again I think The Bear and the Doll would be the best fit for a starting Deville title, it’s got a bankable name, many characteristics of Deville’s work that makes him such an interesting director, very likable leads, and a great script at its core.

If this film steers people away from Deville, then he's not for them. But I highly doubt that would happen. I agree that The Bear and the Doll is the optimal starting place, but this would be second, and if this is the one that's getting a restoration let's maybe not get in the way of getting it released? (Especially since it's a film that you also love!)

I do agree with most everything you’re saying but I do disagree about your point about Deville not being for people who don’t like L’Apprenti Salaud because I can confirm that the same person who vehemently disliked it also very much loved The Bear and the Doll. Once again, I would KILL to see L’Apprenti Salaud get released and I’m not at all trying to prevent its release but I think Radiance should test the waters with some of Deville’s more popular titles before even considering this one.therewillbeblus wrote: Tue May 26, 2026 7:15 pm If this film steers people away from Deville, then he's not for them. You're working off a sample size of 1 and being vocal about this being a wrong move based on that.. come on

I don’t think there’s any world where they choose this one, anyways, as there aren’t even marketable stars (apologies to the Georges Wilsonheads), but they still should because it’s his best and my favorite and all things should be about me at all times. I guarantee the plot is not going to be a consideration for release here. But yes, the BB film seems most likely to come from someone given the star power and it fortunately is one of his absolute bests and would be a great intro for anyone

Fair point but I was not trying to use it as definitive evidence, just rather a personal anecdote that I felt could challenge your argument about how people who don’t like L’Apprenti Salaud will not feel like Deville is for them, which I will admit is flawed. Anyways I think I’ve made this a much bigger issue than it should be and Fran, if you’re reading this, I think I speak for most of the people here when I ask that you please ignore what I’ve been saying before and to please release this film.therewillbeblus wrote: Tue May 26, 2026 7:38 pm You're working off a sample size of 1 and being vocal about this being a wrong move based on that.. come on

Looking through all the CNC pages, it looks like these are all the Devilles that they have funded a restoration for to date:
