I saw Gail Daughtry a little early! It was fun!

It was less consistently funny than I was hoping for but still got plenty of laughs out of me. Slattery killed

Here's hoping Richard Kind is also playing himself.

Watched the generic thriller trailer for Verity, which I’m sure will make a hundred million dollars, and couldn’t believe it when I saw Michael Showalter was the director. Somehow I don’t think this one is a subversive parody of Hoover and her ilk

Any reason you disliked it so strongly?zedz wrote: Sat Aug 15, 2026 5:29 amWorst film I’ve seen all year, and I’ve seen some real dogs!therewillbeblus wrote:It's gotten rave reviews out of Sundance, near-universal praise

Re: David Wain & Other Alums of The State
The jokes are, almost without exception, dumb, obvious and lazy. The comic timing is abysmal, piling up unfunny gags or repeating the same one incessantly as if quantity somehow equals quantity. The plot is inane and the characters barely cliches. It equates "recognize some guy from TV" with "hilarious gag". An hour and a half sniffing somebody else's flopsweat? No thanks.

As I glumly recall, you hated another film from members of the State, the Baxter, too, so I’m not surprised to see you not share Wain and company’s style of humor (and had you known there was a connection, you might have been able to save yourself the hour and a half of torture in advance)

You're absolutely right, though I think I found The Baxter less actively annoying (certainly less shrill) than this film.domino harvey wrote: Mon Aug 17, 2026 7:52 pm As I glumly recall, you hated another film from members of the State, the Baxter, too, so I’m not surprised to see you not share Wain and company’s style of humor (and had you known there was a connection, you might have been able to save yourself the hour and a half of torture in advance)
To be honest, I only booked this because it filled a gap between two much better films (Time and Water, Flesh and Fuel - maybe disrupting that pattern should have been a clue!) and there was literally nothing else I could fit into that gap. Maybe I should have taken a walk in the park, or lay down in the middle of the road, instead.
