Re: Passages
Also had a decent run of smaller roles in serious tv and movies. I liked him in Clemency.

British film editor John Grover, who worked on six James Bond films (The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill) and was an assistant editor on Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

J. Todd Anderson, storyboard artist for Michael Almereyda, Shane Black, and most notably the Coen brothers, starting with Raising Arizona and continuing uninterrupted thru their solo work (his final credit will be Joel’s Jack of Spades next year). Ethan cowrote his directorial debut The Naked Man, which is trying at something but is unfortunately like watching a goofy Coens movie with a serious head injury.

He also appears in Fargo as one of the passersby killed by Gaear; in the cast credits, instead of his name, there is a parody of [The Artist Formerly Known as] Prince's symbol.

He had a truly stranger than fiction life. When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder? is one of the craziest films to come out of Columbia/Sony, and I am always urging people to see itAunt Peg wrote: Sun Oct 04, 2026 11:37 pm Marjoe Gortner, 82: https://variety.com/2026/film/news/marj ... 236898534/

Re: Passages
He is fantastic in Red Ryder leading a very fine cast including the likes of Lee Grant, Candy Clark & Peter Firth amongst others. It is one of my most wishful Blu Ray releases.beamish14 wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2026 2:47 amHe had a truly stranger than fiction life. Also Marjoe (1972) directed by Howard Smith & Sarah Kernochan is a must see. Marjoe was marrying adults at the age of 5. Another film that needs greater exposure.
And it is impossible to forget him in Earthquake & Bert I. Gordon's The Good of the Gods (1976).

Re: Passages
Definitely needs more exposure. I know some of his direct relatives and his parents were SO messed up. Someone really needs to do a biographical film about him...Aunt Peg wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2026 1:49 pm Also Marjoe (1972) directed by Howard Smith & Sarah Kernochan is a must see. Disgraced televangelist Jim Bakker, who was convicted of fraud and conspiracy, and former Congressman Dennis Hastert (the longest serving Republican Speaker of the House), who was convicted of financial offenses related to the sexual abuse of teenage boys. (Hastert admitted to the abuse at a sentencing hearing but he was never tried for those crimes.)

Did they die together in some dramatic fashion like Thelma & Louise only in a golf cart?

Invaluable critic Bill Krohn, expert on Hitchcock and Fuller and much else, and once the Los Angeles correspondent to Cahiers du cinéma. His friend Andy Rector and others have noted his passing on social media.

Chris Wickham, an excellent mediaeval historian who often considered the importance of economic realities in the shifts in European history, generally from a somewhat Marxist perspective (tho' without becoming bogged down in ideology). I really enjoyed his 2016 book Mediaeval Europe. He wrote clear, enjoyable prose, but avoided the rhetorical, novelistic style of populist mediaeval historians like Dan Jones.

Re: Passages
Krohn was also a regular contributor to the Auterist-themed "a_film_by" discussion group set up by Fred Camper in 2003, running to the late 2000s, which also featured the likes of Jonathan Rosenbaum, Gabe Klinger, Dave Kehr, and later David Ehrenstein amongst its contributors. His first post (under the handle "hotlove666"!) starts at post 50 in Camper's collected archive of the posts, and characteristically is a defence of Hitchcock's original intentions for The Paradine Case and a mention of The Big Sky.pistolwink wrote: Wed Oct 14, 2026 11:09 pm Invaluable critic Bill Krohn, expert on Hitchcock and Fuller and much else, and once the Los Angeles correspondent to Cahiers du cinéma. Re: Passages
"A Film By" was a fascinating group -- I think I was a regular reader there from almost the beginning (not sure how much I posted, however).

Re: Passages
I never posted to a_film_by (I somehow felt it was best to let the 'professionals' have a space of their own to interact online, along with not being a particularly die-hard Auterist myself, though I do think it is a handy tool to have in the arsenal of film criticism), but did love reading the discussions that went on there, including your contributions.

Re: Passages
Fred's A Film By archive only runs through 2005, I can't recall whether the group lasted longer. Looking at the archive, it seems I was a lot more active than I recalled.
