Does anyone have a copy of the French DVD of Jean-Pierre Melville's "Second Breath?" I was wondering whether it had English subtitles. How does it measure up to the excellent French disc of "Le Samourai" by the same company?

Nope, no English subs on the Rene Chateau DVD, but in all other respects an excellent (anamorphic) transfer, and one of Melville's greatest films. Definitely needs an English-friendly release.

It certainly does. Fortunately, Rialto is preparing both Le Doulos and the rarely seen Jean Morin, Pretre for theatrical re-release, which might also mean a R1 DVD release via Criterion. One can only hope they do the same for Le Deuxieme Souffle.

Some samples from the French DVD here.

And some info about the upcoming French remake here. With Alain Corneau (Police Python 357 & Le Choix des armes) directing and Daniel Auteuil / Michel Blanc in the Ventura / Paul Meurisse roles, this could be very interesting.
