It's going to be Napoleon, and it's going to be the biggest edition they've ever done for a single film. But it still won't have the Carl Davis score, for legal reasons.

Betting on Criterion to release a silent film is a losing strategy

I'm sure they'd consider it worthwhile, but only in the unlikely event that they could get the Carl Davis score and the five-and-a-half-hour cut. Personally I'm holding out for them to discover the full-length version of von Stroheim's Greed in a janitor's closet.

Napoleon is a really excellent prediction.

Hoping for Celine and Julie Go Boating, as it's probably the only Rivette without a Region A release that they could get the rights to, no? Unless L'amour fou is in play.
Anyway, a loaded edition would be a dream release, spine 1000 or not.

The Citizen Kane guesses from the New Year's drawing made me really happy (though the confirmation of Bamboozled has largely dashed that), and Napoleon would be my Criterion dream, but I'm getting the feeling that it'll be "Grand" Budapest Hotel. It's overdue for its Criterion edition release and they've given him nice round numbers like 300 and 700 in the past. The Royal Tenenbaums was one of my gateway drugs into the collection and I love Anderson, but I'm hoping I'm wrong and we'll get something with a little more stature in the cinema canon.
On the other hand, they nailed it with #500, so maybe I shouldn't doubt so much.

I see Napoleon on the Forthcoming list. Was it actually confirmed to be coming from Criterion at some point?

Yes, Kim Hendrickson confirmed a number of years back at a Wexner Q&A session.
We are at 7 releases before the magic #1000. It will either be the last release of October or the first release of November. It all depends on how many new spines we get in September.
Although it may be 6 if Criterion adjusts the Koker spines which that seems like a good bet.

I can't wait for the 1000th spine to be announced so that I can finally lock this thread and then jettison it directly into the fiery depths of the sun

I didn't know Vice was being released by Criterion.

I'd kinda like it - to be a joykill perhaps - if 1000 wasn't an event release. It places a title above the rest and surely the cream rises anyway, because of the film and the package, not the spine number. I mean - the Bergman box would surely have been a great 1000 if it was only about prestige.

Well, we'll know what 1000 is next month. It will either be some random title that has no significance for Criterion to be 1000 or it could be an iconic title that may be linked to Criterion's laser days. My guess is the latter.

My money's still on PARIS IS BURNING, but I wonder if Criterion would be so controversial yet brave enough to spend the next three months announcing a slew of upgraded DVD titles and only two new releases, then start off January 2020 with Spine #1000.

Some years (I know not every year) Criterion does the predictable thing and makes October somewhat mostly horror themed or along those lines.
The House That Jack Built.

If they really do have any special landmark plans for the 1000th spines, there's no reason it's guaranteed to be announced for release in October. It could very well be held back until they're ready for the big film (assuming they have plans at all).

Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if Oct announces 998, 999, and 1001, leaving #1,000 (*cough*KANE*cough*) for November

If they have a 30 film Akira Kurosawas cinema lined up for November, and Godzilla for December, it’d make sense for 1000 in October.

I think 1000 is definitely getting announced next month, as Jonathan Keogh (before he nuked his twitter) mentioned that the last video he cut for Criterion is coming in October and it features all 1000 releases.
