Covers of previously released films -
Thanks for attaching those... as I was clicking through to each individual film's page to grab the images, I didn't notice they hadn't updated them with the new covers

The new Chungking Express cover is a severe downgrade

Those aren't really covers though, just placeholders for the website

Sure, I guess they're "covers" in the sense that they represent the movie in the accompanied book or whatever is the closest one gets to a 'cover' in a box set. I still don't see the need to change it, but then again, I could probably say that about everything in this set.

Yep, I added to that before you posted, after realizing it's just another nail in the coffin

On my Fellini set, the insert that houses the discs has scratches or some other imperfections. I e-mailed Mulvaney about it; hoping for a replacement insert.
So Criterion told me to ask the seller for a replacement first, which I did. Barnes and Noble sent me a whole new set, which arrived today. There is no bubbling on the package, as there was on my original.
The disc housing insert on the replacement has a few, tiny visual imperfections. Just some white spots. I'm thinking this is a not wholly uncommon thing, as I saw some pictures on twitter that showed other disc inserts with some white spots.
But the spots were particularly bad on my original; they're barely noticeable on my replacement. I'm quite happy with the replacement.

Frankly, the Celine and Julie cover is hilarious.

Defending Your Life is perhaps the worst cover in the history of this label, and that's saying something considering some of the landmarks along the way

Nothing will ever top (or bottom) the Cluny Brown cover for me.

Isn’t it just the theatrical poster moved around a bit? I mean, it is bad, don’t get me wrong, but it doesn’t appear to be entirely Criterion’s fault this time.

Unless there was some contractual obligation to use that image and tagline(s), I don't see any excuses here. Movie's great though!

Based on that and Lost in America, Brooks seems to have a preference for just using the theatrical art.

All of the text above the star names, as well as the billboard itself need to be excised. Then it would merely be one of their most boring covers, instead of one of their worst.

I have no clue what to make of the Celine and Julie Go Boating cover. I personally don't think it represents the film at all, but I've only seen it once so perhaps I'm missing something? I'd be especially curious to read a positive take on it.

except for Celine and Julie (which isn't that great but is good) all of March's covers are bad but especially lazy. The abundance of cover art for 2021's releases that just use stills from the films is just awful not to mention supplements getting fewer and barer. I think all those boxset releases really drained the staff.

Does this mean that New Yorker edition of CELINE AND JULIE isn’t coming after all?

RDRR I get it but Rosenbaum said he assumed as much years ago on a Reddit AMA and figured his extras were never gong to materialize

I have a bit of a fondness for Defending Your Life as I actually got a copy of the theatrical poster after working up the courage as a kid to ask someone at the local video store if they had any posters they wanted to part with! I was given the one for this film randomly and had it on my bedroom wall for a number of years in the early 90s. It will be nice to finally see the film itself to see if it manages to live up to the poster!

It’s the scene where they’re eating the candy, right?
Eh, I’ve never been a huge cover art guy either way, but I don’t mind this one. Fantastic month, I’ll be getting most of these even though I already have them.

I think it is empirically a bad cover––ugly to the eye, disorienting, seemingly without reason––but I appreciate that it has the same disregard for convention than the film does, plus done with a superficial amateurishness that's fitting for the film's aesthetics.

Looks more like a cover for
Daisies.

Very interesting. Yes, I think you've nailed what seems to be the intentions of the cover. Personally... what made me first want to seek out and watch this film, many years ago, was seeing the enchanting image of Juliet Berto in the magician's outfit. That is still the first thing that comes to mind when I think of this film, so I always kind of imagined a Criterion cover for
Celine and Julie being an original painting (maybe in style of a mid-20th century paperback cover) that depicted that scene.
