says its the best movie ever!
I didn't realize the director was the Day/Nightwatch dude. Loved both those flix, but I wouldn't be caught dead at anything AnJo appears in.

Bekmambetov's previous films weren't exactly renowned for taking themselves seriously - especially
Day Watch. And I didn't think this was a problem.

It could fairly be said that
this review is not exactly a rave.

Yeah, that's a terrific review and I don't generally like Bradshaw. As a disclaimer for those thus disinclined, he's kinda pushin' toward Armond territory a bit with this (with a dash of Anthony Lane).

I wonder how many morons are out there right now thinking that you could really curve a bullet's trajectory by swinging their arm a certain way.

As soon as I saw this moronic trailer I just slapped my head, but all this talk of curving bullets is
one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.
Back to Jolie though, this actually prompted me to think how many Jolie films I have actually seen (two -
The Bone Collector; by the numbers,
Gone in 60 Seconds; awful) and think why the hell is she so famous?

Um, hello!! She has magnificent breasts!!
(That said, she has only marginal acting ability and absolutely no judgment in terms of the films she chooses to be in. Brad Pitt, for example, may not be the most talented actor, but--a few atrocities excepted--he usually picks good projects.)

Considering the surprisingly good reviews rolling in, I'm trying to muster up a remote ounce of excitement for this one, but I keep coming up dry. Seeing it after Wall-E tomorrow night should have me rolling into Wanted with an upbeat attitude, though. We'll see. It is quite the curiosity that it's getting such great reviews, since the trailer offers absolutely no insight into why this is remotely worth seeing.

I find that if a film gets mainly good reviews, often that means it's bad. For an example, look at the certified fresh pick on the front of RT right now.
EDIT: It was Mongol.

In some ways, "Wanted" -- the debut Hollywood feature of Russian director Timur Bekmambetov (of "Day Watch" and "Night Watch" fame) -- is your garden-variety summer action picture, delivering an assortment of sick thrills along with the mind-bendy special effects we've come to expect in post-"Matrix" movies. But McAvoy, as Wesley Gibson, an aimless, apathetic desk jockey who's recruited into a life of guns and murder by a mysterious minx appropriately named Fox (Angelina Jolie), carves out a distinctly human space in the midst of the movie's outlandish, joyously depraved violence. "Wanted" is fast-moving and bloody, enjoyable even within its unapologetically generic limits. But McAvoy is its real secret weapon: With his X-ray blue eyes and lips that look bitten with anxiety, he has the miraculous ability to fool us into thinking there's really something at stake here.

Meh Jolie is hot, but it's not the kind of hot that makes me think about her when I jerk it. Kind of like Night Watch isn't a movie I think of when I'm trying to come up with really great cinema. But when I think on it, it was still a good time at the theater. Hell, a guy pulls off his own head and draws a sword out of his own spine, and laughs about it. After a trick like that, I'm willing to bet this movie manages to earn its paycheck, even if it doesn't accomplish anything important.

Only with her clothes on, she never looks so hot clothes off (though I haven't seen
Cyborg 2, which is supopsedly the goods on this front.
Brad Pitt seems to be picking better projects these days, perhaps something that comes with age.

According to all the raving filmmakers on the commentary tracks to her 'early stardom' films like The Bone Collector, Gia was the film that caught their attention. I haven't had the chance to see that one myself yet though.
I quite liked her role in The Good Shepherd, though it is a small role and a marginalised character, and of course there's A Mighty Heart but I don't think either of them have much to do with her star status!
I've always felt sorry for her because she was
perfect for the Lara Croft films but the films themselves never really felt as if they captured much of the atmosphere of the games (though the first one had its moments). Plus I liked her Sky Captain character, and her appearance came as blessed relief from the bitch-fest of the two main characters! So I guess what I'm saying is that she ticks all my beautiful, upper class English accented dominant action women boxes!
My impression is that she is probably known to general audiences for a bit of the Tomb Raider thing (even if the films were forgettable, she made enough of an impression to do two, even if the second was made by *cough*Jan De Bont*cough*!), a little bit from her walking out of the pool in Beowulf (which I must have seen a hundred times by now without yet having seen the film!) and mostly from all the tabloid hype around her relationship with Pitt, something which makes Mr and Mrs Smith marginally more interesting to watch. I don't think she really deserves to be tabloid fodder, though I'd wish she could get better roles to confirm her acting chops. The problem is though that I think she is still on shaky ground with 'general' audiences in that she's made an impression
despite of rather than with her films - she hasn't yet made a big smash that everyone associates her with the success of (and I guess Wanted will not change things unless Bekmambetov's style comes as a shock to audiences unfamiliar with his Night Watch films). So I guess most people consider her "that hot babe married to Brad Pitt" still. That might not be so bad but if she wants to diversify (as A Mighty Heart might suggest) a huge mainstream hit would be just the thing to anchor her star status to allow her to go off and do the more off beat roles. Until then I feel she is in a shaky position of an Alexander or a Beyond Borders flop causing the public, and more importantly the studios, to forget about her as fickly as they've celebrated her.

Not that winning an Oscar is ever an indication of acting chops (see Halle Berry), but it's easy to forget that Jolie did win one for Girl, Interrupted so if you wanted some ammo for credibility, she at least has that (even though she was essentially playing herself in the movie). Granted, history usually hasn't proven to be kind to the careers of Best Supporting Actress winners, but...
