Wanted (Timur Bekmambetov, 2008)
Guys, we can discuss this movie I guess, but I made this thread as a self-help thread. We need to hold each other accountable, especially with such a beautiful woman involved. I will not allow myself to spend money on this.
My name is Blake, and I love Angelina Jolie.

When is the last time Jolie has actually made movie worth watching?moviscop wrote:I will not allow myself to spend money on this.

Wanted... bound to be trash
Beowulf... nope
A Mighty Heart... nope
The Good Shepherd... could of been, but not really
Mr & Mrs Smith... nope
Alexander... nope
Sky Captain... nope
Beyond Borders, Taking Lives... nope
The Tomb Raider films, Gone in Sixty Seconds... gag
Despite the fact that Changeling will probably break the streak, can someone inform me why she is such a big deal? I know there's the whole Brad Pitt thing now, and people find her attractive, but the woman has been completely living off a '99 Oscar for the last decade.

I dunno, I thought she was pretty good in this one -- certainly better than anything she's done in years -- but I think that this film worked more for me because of Michael Winterbottom's direction.Cold Bishop wrote:When is the last time Jolie has actually made movie worth watching?

The film looks really bad.
I'm not sure we need a film glorifying assassins in this way. I mean, of course we've seen plenty of great films revolving around professional killers in the past, but there's something about portraying them as uber-cool heroes whose moral compass is never questioned that rubs me the wrong way.
Of course, I could be wrong.

Yeah, but they're good assassins. "Kill one save a thousand."

While we're kicking her around (and she sure as hell deserves it) we might as well toss "Hackers" in there.Cold Bishop wrote:When is the last time Jolie has actually made movie worth watching?moviscop wrote:I will not allow myself to spend money on this.

The red-band trailer was really the deal-breaker for me. Between Morgan Freeman's awkward delivery of "motherfucker" and the painfully obvious Fight Club-Matrix ideologies being spouted were just too much to even take seriously. Plus, what did this guy direct before? I know it's his American debut and wondered if anyone here was vaguely familiar with his work.

Yes, I did see the trailer. I wasn't being over sincere with that question.Cold Bishop wrote:Did you see the trailer? I think derision is the most it's gonna get.Mr_sausage wrote:So, does anyone actually want to discuss the movie?
I think the movie would be a lot more fun if they kept the cartoon thinking of the characters and then plopped them into a movie using real physics. Then when Jolie slides her car so as to catch that bullet-curving kid in the open door, we get to see him splatter all over the inside of the car while Jolie screams in horror over her ruined couture. In fact, I would love it if they were all military fail-outs of some kind whose over-achieving glee drags some poor oblivious kid through the most colossal fuck-ups imaginable. I'm not helping the downward spiral am I?

Night Watch and Day Watch, two films I really love a lot -- and look forward to the coming third. The mix of horror and humor is spot on. (and the novels they are based on are pretty cool as well) The director, Timur Bekmambetov is the only reason I'll be there on opening night to see Wanted. Of course it looks ridiculous and absurd -- but I don't care, I'm going for the Timur. Personally, I think the Russian trailer makes it look far more interesting. (too bad we won't get the Russian version with subtitles!) I'll be surprised if it tops Day Watch, but we'll see...flyonthewall2983 wrote:Plus, what did this guy direct before? Heh, true! I think that you'll see most reviewers comparing it The Matrix, but I'm sure it will have a strong opening weekend based on Angelina Jolie's presence and the promise of stylized action. I dunno, even though it looks hopelessly derivative, it does look like snazzy eye candy but I think I'll wait 'till DVD.Tom Hagen wrote:Perhaps the most noteworthy thing about this film is that its parodywas released 9 months ahead of it.
