The Razzies nominated Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, and Aronofsky for mother!, as if anyone still cared what these guys think. Oh, and the Book of Henry? Zero noms

There was a general consensus on Twitter that the Razzies have lost their edge now and haven't had any merit in years. A reminder that they've done silly things in the past. It's not even close to my favorite Kubrick but The Shining was nominated for Worst Director. Given it's status now a Worst Director Nomination seems a little egregious now don't you all think? I love joke awards but with the rise of things like CinemaSins it's become rather tiresome in my opinion.

The Razzies peaked when Sandra Bullock actually showed up to collect her award. Should've called it a day immediately after

Yeah those moms are ridiculous, but the Razzies always nominate just to spite or cause an outrage. Nominating Bay every time gets boring quickly.
Also, having just seen Get Out I find it weird that it's getting this much love. It's a decent film at best and it's satire is rather silly and unfocused. I won't be PC for a second, but is it getting all this attention mostly because of our current political and racial tense times? Haven't seen Three Billboards but the forum dislike of that film begs the question if any film that sort of deals with racism at the moment and is half decent suddenly becomes glorified?

Films that obviously deal with social issues tend to get attention, especially from their country of origin. Current social climate can play into that. I also think that, as in the case of Get Out, the pedigree and history/track record of the director can add another layer of intrigue.

This may be better served in the film’s specific thread, but I’m curious as to what you found silly and unfocused about Peele’s picture?

Spoiler
I thought the first half was pretty decent, even though the film seemed just a tad silly (the obvious racism and weirdness, the black servents and their mechanical behavior) but the entire second half, which relies on horror was just predictable and pushed it into even sillier grounds. I felt like the film was constantly on the verge of turning into a pitch black comedy, which is why the first half was at least interesting as this push pull between the unease and mystery worked decently. It also didn't help that the film kept reminding me, unfavorably, of Being John Malkovich and Stepford Wives. And the whole conceit lacks any energy; the blind man wants the healthy body not because it's a black body, just because Chris is a good photographer who can see. Also all the white people are old, which sort of negates the point as well.
I also found Peele's direction to be decent at best, which means OK for a first timer but nothing special.
The acting was good though (Kaluuya was terrific). I mean it's still a decent enough picture and I was engaged while trying to understand where the film goes (even though it's pretty easy to guess, it's more the what will the while folks do to him rather than what will happen).
I mean there have been worst films to get nominated (and even win), and I found this to be average and not awful. But there's nothing here to distinguish it or make it one of the year's best films. I'll be way happier if Phantom Thread or the terrific Florida Project got in.

Wow, way more love for Phantom Thread than anticipated.

Hopefully that director snub puts Three Billboards out of contention.

I'm saddened that there's no love for Florida Project, but I'm ecstatic to see Phantom Thread and Anderson get nominated. Weird to see The Post get Best Picture and actress and nothing else, also surprised to see Darkest Hour slip in. Still, Anderson's second nomination!

Congrats to PTA, Phantom Thread massively over-performed! And Mudbound breaks the Netflix streak

Interested how Phantom Thread’s inclusion might impact the BP race as likely the first to be dropped due to lack of #1 votes - if Darkest Hour’s voters will go for Dunkirk, they’d probably go for Call Me By Your Name or Lady Bird, right? Maybe Shape of Water?

(I can’t imagine who’d have Three Billboards at #2, anyway)

I think the Shape of Water pretty well has this in the bag

Well, it is #2... (sorry)

Anyway, happy beyond belief about PTA and effusive praise from his peers likely helped (Barry Jenkins was particularly smitten). I can’t remember a Best Director slate I’ve liked better than this one in a long while.

Still think Lady Bird or Get Out is your winner.

Also - sad about The Florida Project. I had no idea it’d be so difficult to love, but for all of its charms and Baker’s excellent work, it was apparently not an easy thing for voters to face down.

The only thing people are holding against Lady Bird andGet Out in terms of their Best Picture chances is the editing stat, which is much more negligible that missing acting, directing or writing so probably.

I gotta admit, the last time I watched the Oscars was when Robert Altman got his honorary award. Apart from Joan Rivers, I’ve never been able to enjoy these things.

It’s wonderful to see a woman get a Cinematography nomination for the first time, had I not just read that-I would have assumed there had been others, like Ellen Kuras.

What stood out to me was Kobe Bryant, given the talk of sexual harassment/abuse. His case, unlike many others who have been named - actuality has horrific evidence/half confession and settlement weeks before trial. But whatever, he bought his wife a really big ring.

Not that I have interest in seeing The Room or Disastor Artist-I thought Franco was getting a lot of Oscar hype?

I hope it's not Get Out, which has obvious "diversity" nominations for acting and direction, at least. I wonder if Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey don't have their nominations in the bag already.

I don't know, I'm really getting tired, now, of seeing these real life modern drama films (and in that I include Get Out, because of its identity politics) get nominated and win. Admittedly, I liked Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri a lot, but other than Dunkirk (which Nolan, of course, won't win for) and The Shape of Water, it just seems like we've had fifteen or so years of the same kind of quasi-independent adult drama films that say something about society that year being nominated, and, particularly, winning. There are, of course, exceptions, but I have to admit that this year, the awards feel less relevant than ever to me. The only pleasant surprise was the Adapted Screenplay nomination for Logan, which I appreciate, but don't really understand.

I suppose I'm the only one mildly saddened by the lack of Capt. Underpants in best animated.

Get Out is a tiny $5m horror movie that became a huge hit because everyone liked it, this whole take seems extremely weird

Let's run down some absolutely real things that aren't at all reflective of users' personal biases:

- Feminists are driving porn stars to suicide because they're too emboldened
- Get Out got nominated because it's "diverse" (notice the quotes! very important)
- Blade Runner 2049 wasn't nominated because of Wonder Woman

Am I missing anything?
