That seems a pretty big finger against ESPN and Gkids.

It's an even bigger screw-you to Netflix, which bothered spending the money to release Five Came Back theatrically just last week only to be told it's for moot anyway.

Ha. That's ironic, given that last year I believe that Mark Harris was adamant that O.J.: Made in America shouldn't count as a theatrical feature. Now a multi-part documentary based on his book will likely be ineligible for awards consideration. I wonder how he feels about that!

Quick question - is there enough quality "series" type documentaries to justify a new Oscar category for Best Documentary Film Series?

(Also to frame it another way, if they establish one, will people like Netflix distribute more of their docs theatrically just to get a shot at an Oscar, thus justifying the award as well?)

The problem is such a thing highlights how these movies are really TV miniseries and shouldn't be eligible

Did they ever catch the real killer? I'm only 5 1/2 hours into the documentary.

I heard an interesting story about how the WWF almost went into negotiations for him to wrestle Roddy Piper at WrestleMania 12. From the sound of it he was up for it (namely from a financial perspective) but at the last minute they backed off, deciding whatever they would do would be in too poor taste.

Probably the only time I've ever heard of them saying no to a celebrity appearing on their programming.

This year's invitees to the Academy include Mike Mills, Elle Fanning, Brit Marling (interestingly only invited by the writer's branch, not the actors), Jodorowsky, Jonas Mekas, Pedro Costa, Lav Diaz, Jessica Hausner, Mohammad Rasoulouf, among many others

They also invited Tom Ford, so clearly not. I was surprised by some of the former nominees who only just now got invited, like Viggo Mortensen

I'm shocked that it's taken this long for Jonas Mekas to get invited. He's been a bastion of American cinema for more than sixty years.

That was the surprise for me too though more because I am shocked more than a dozen members know who he is.

I was under the impression that all nominated actors are automatically invited in the year following their nomination. Is this not correct? Is such an invitation for only a limited time? Did he perhaps decline a previous invitation and they are trying to get him on board with another attempt?

Lav Diaz better shorten his films considerably if he wants to get members to view his films.

It's not automatic (Hailee Steinfeld and Rinko Kikuchi were also nominated for acting years ago and are only just now getting invited), though he may have been invited and declined in the past (Sean Penn initially turned his invite down, so it happens), I don't know.

There's dues involved as well and some actors don't think it's worth it.
