Inexplicably only 2 of the 7 remaining films will be out before the Oscars though (Darkest Hour and Three Billboards)

Yeah, I don't know what Dom's source is, but the Post and Phantom Thread won't be out until April, probably. More significant is that Call Me By Your Name excepted this year's entire lineup will likely be released on UHD (Lady Bird hasn't been confirmed yet, but considering every other A24 movie that's made half as much money as it is has now been put out it seems near certain).

The Post release date is March 6 and Phantom Thread March 13 according to Amazon

Oh, shoot, I forgot about that one, guess my fact was a little off. The fact that Phantom Thread's UHD was happening before it got nominated for Best Picture does make me imagine that Focus is probably planning on doing one for that too, but maybe they'll hold off and release it the same date as the later one (I don't think they've done one yet)?

The date I'm seeing for Phantom Thread is March 27, which I'm not sure about the source of. La La Land, which released in early December, released in Late April. It just seems incredibly abnormal to rush this release, especially considering they weren't anticipating so many Oscar nods. I'm not seeing either of these dates on Amazon listings for DVD, BD, UHD, or Instant.

Weird, that's what my Amazon preorders claim the shipping estimate is for each, but there's no info in the listings

It's possible that's the streaming date and it's somehow gotten confused and pushed that through instead? Which would mean it'll then be 28 days from that point on, which is much more typical. Certainly seems like an odd coincidence for two separate late blooming BP films to both decide on a fairly unprecedented rushed release the same year.

I thought it was surprising too, which is why I posted about it! But it does look like maybe something hinky is going on with Amazon's shipping info instead

PTA spoke about doing the HDR grade in his AMA the other week - and this was before it got a Best Picture nomination - so it’s happening (available to order on Amazon.ca, too)

...it seems very possible that Shape of Water will only get Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. Which is great, those are the two you'd want if any - but it seems really strange that it's just coasting on general goodwill downballot without having enough in any one place to bring home a win (I know it's favored for score, but I'll hold onto the Phantom Thread wave as long as I can). I know Spotlight only got two Oscars two years ago but this line of thinking just seems off somehow, I dunno.

I'm seriously considering actually putting money down on Dunkirk for Best Picture, as I think it's odds are substantially better than the 50:1 payout I'm seeing. But it still probably won't do it.

What's favored over Shape of Water in Production Design? That seems like a logical downballot award for it

I'm thinking Blade Runner for that one, just based on the "what has the most Production Design?" metric a lot of people use to vote for these categories. By "very possible" I meant "it is possible," not that it's likely.

Pretty sure she just locked up the win with that delightful stunt, hopefully it doesn’t run afoul of some idiotic and obscure academy rule resulting in her disqualification.

She was going to win anyway, the whole “winning competitive Oscar the same year as an Honorary one” is a tough narrative to beat. Frankly I don’t really see how this one thing would convince somebody to change their vote!

Even Kobe Bryant showed up to the luncheon. It's kind of a trip seeing him in the group photo along with a wide range filmmakers (including the Varda cutout).

I think all she needs to win is for people to see the film. Regardless of the relative quality of the other nominees, it would be hard to sit through Visages, Villages and not want to give the woman a prize.

I’m very happy for her. Cleo from 5 to 7 was my gateway to “serious” film (art-house film?) Caught it when I was 19 and fell in love on the spot.
