Cannes 2012
It appears that Cosmopolis and On the Road will be screening at Cannes this year. The festival runs from May 16-May 27. Cosmopolis has it's world premiere in France on May 18 and On the Road on May 23. Could be unrelated to the festival but that seems highly unlikely.

Re: Cannes 2011
Moonrise Kingdom is likely the opener, with a May 16 French release.

Nanni Moretti will be head of the jury this year, with Jean-Pierre Dardenne heading the Cinéfondation jury. Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom has been announced as the opening film but the full selection won't be announced until the 19th. However, this blog has posted what's apparently a list that was leaked on the official website.

Re: Cannes 2012
Here's an English-language website's take on the list. It sounds like some are doubting its legitimacy. Surprise inclusions are Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master and Malick's The Burial. It seems awfully early for The Master to debut, and one always assumes that any Malick project is years away from being finished. The list is conspicuous by its absence of Kiarostami's Like Someone in Love, Haneke's Love, and Walter Salles' On the Road, all of which were thought to be near-certainties. It's also strange that Moonrise Kingdom is on a list labeled "in competition" when we know that it is the opening night film (usually out-of-competition). If half the list is true, it's going to be an exciting year.Calvin wrote:Nanni Moretti will be head of the jury this year, with Jean-Pierre Dardenne heading the Cinéfondation jury. If that list is true, Neil Young will have to amend his odds significantly.

I also question the lack of Haneke's Love, Ken Loach's The Angel's Share and Cristian Mungiu's Place Beyond the Hills. Empire magazine also pretty much confirmed that the new Peter Greenaway and Thomas Vinterburg films will be at Cannes. (though I suppose they could be sidebar titles). Hopefully On the Road isn't getting the "Restless" slot, which would indicate it probably sucks.

Re: Cannes 2012
I'm a bit skeptical - mainly regarding the Haneke omission (how on earth would that happen?) but also because it gives the number of Competition titles as 24 and, IIRC, didn't Frémaux make a statement that there would be fewer Competition films this year to draw more attention to quality? Also they give the title of the German film as "Hard to Be a God" and I'm pretty sure it has since been officially renamed.
Some of these mentions are interesting, though.

The Mungiu is on there under its Romanian title. It's a lot easier for me to decipher on the list that I intended to link earlier.ianungstad wrote:I also question the lack of Haneke's Love, Ken Loach's The Angel's Share and Cristian Mungiu's Place Beyond the Hills. I really doubt Dolan will be chosen over Haneke.

Perhaps all these films are Selection titles but I find it hard to believe that this is our In Competition slate.

Re: Cannes 2012
I personally think it's fake. Just from a quick google search:
Love (Michael Haneke) - French premiere date: May 23, 2012
Like Someone In Love (Abbas Kirostami) - French premiere date: May 17, 2012
On the Road (Walter Salles) - French premiere date: May 23, 2012
Cannes May 16-27.
EDIT: That french Cannes blog posted the list on April 2. I wonder if the person who provided the scoop of "leaked" competition titles to this blog had sent the scoop on April 1st and this is just some dumb April Fool's prank.

Roy Andersson who isn't known for working fast, have stated several times the lst year that he plans to have his movie finished to Cannes 2014, so it seems odd that it would be finished in a months time.

Re: Cannes 2012
This article from January says it was still shooting at that time. And according to this it was also shooting in October, with a planned 2013 completion date. You, the Living took three years to shoot and Songs from the Second Floor took four, so that's entirely plausible.

Re: Cannes 2012
I submitted my short film to the Director's Fortnight and Critic's Week but as neither have been in touch since the initial acknowledgement email, I imagine the film will be absent from both line-ups tomorrow. But as they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained! (Still hopeful that Edinburgh and other film festivals later this year will invite us)

Weerasethakul's Mekong Hotel presumably kept out of competition due its 61 minute length.

And because, to quote executive producer Keith Griffiths' punctuation, it's a 'documentary'.John Edmond wrote:Weerasethakul's Mekong Hotel presumably kept out of competition due its 61 minute length.
Griffiths has just confirmed on Facebook that the film deliberately wasn't submitted for either competition or Un Certain Regard because of these factors, and he's delighted that it was nonetheless still given a special screening slot.
