Re: 2012 Film Festival Awards
All of the Berlinale films have screened so these are my final predictions:
Golden Bear: “TABU”, Miguel Gomes
Jury Prize: “JUST THE WIND”, Fliegauf Benedek
Best Director: Christian Petzold, “BARBARA”
Best Actor: Lars Eidinger, “HOME FOR THE WEEKEND”
Best Actress: Rachel Mwanza, “WAR WITCH”
Best Script: “SISTER”, Ursula Meier
Outstanding Artistic Contribution: "MERCY", Matthias Glasner, for the cinematography
Alfred P. Bauer Prize: "CAESAR MUST DIE", Paolo Taviani & Vittorio Taviani
FIPRESCI Prize: "BARBARA", Christian Petzold
With Mike Leigh as president of the jury this year I could see "Just the Wind" triumphing over the favoured "Tabu" and "War Witch" - after all Leigh's favourite film is "The Tree of Wooden Clogs" iirc.

Film Festival Circuit 2012
Runs April 25-May 2. Official site is here: http://www.iffboston.org/. New films by Andrea Arnold, Todd Solondz, Guy Maddin, and Hirokazu Kore-eda, plus a bunch more. I'm planning to check out Arnold's Wuthering Heights, Kore-eda's I Wish, Madden's Keyhole, VHS (dir. Ti West, Joe Swanberg, et al.), Nobody Walks (Ry Russo Young), The Loneliest Planet (dir. Julia Loktev), Think of Me (dir. Bryan Wizemann), and Polisse (dir. Maiwenn). This will be my first time at the festival and I'm looking forward to it.
Any other Boston-area folks (or out-of-towners) planning to attend this?

Tribeca Film Festival 2012
I've never been excited about the Tribeca Film Festival, even after moving to NYC. It's still a solid showcase for documentaries, but unless you work in the business and use it to shmooze, I can't see any cinephile getting excited over its usual slate of narrative films. (Their program of shorts are often abysmal.)
I always get dragged to it by people who really want to see something at Tribeca. Stephen Holden's made a few recommendations. Any others, particularly docs?

I'll only be able to make it sporadically, sadly, since I'll have to split time with school, my grunt job, and new release screenings. But I'll be pissed if I miss WUTHERING or the Kore-eda.

Re: Tribeca Film Festival 2012
It is not a documentary but since Michael Winterbottom's Trishna has come up here and in the Boston Film Festival thread it might be worth noting that this is an India-set adaptation of Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Though I haven't seen it yet, the most worrying aspect of the film from what I have read about it is that it has apparently combined the two main male characters of Angel and Alec into one role! I have to admit that I'm curious to see how exactly that will work out!

Ugh. Well, at least they were (more or less) hunting the deer, plus they actually ate them, or at least one of them, but I can't believe no one was on top of the legalities of 1) having no license and 2) hunting out-of-season.

Re: 2012 Film Festival Awards
The first 10 films in the Shanghai festival selection have been announced. Jean-Jacques Annaud is president of the Jury.
A bit sad to see this festival continue to struggle for relevance, with leftovers such as the horribly-received Berlinale pic "I, Anna" getting a slot. I don't think any of these films except for the Biju are world premieres.
I assume the remaining films in selection will be homegrown pics, which are usually the reason to keep an eye on this festival.

All of the festivals will be taking place this year (Cairo was cancelled last year).
Have updated dates for some of the festivals. Apichatpong Weerasethakul will be Jury president for Locarno this year.
Some Moscow titles have also been announced, as well as two jury members.

Re: 2012 Film Festival Awards
The Shanghai Film Festival continues to stumble along. Though China's rise assures that they can continue to attract at least one big name for the jury.
I think the main purpose at this point is really the linked media market and television program buying. That and "lifting the country’s soft power" as the SIFF site chooses to put.
Anyway, a synopsis for each of the 10 competition films can be found here, with a little write-up on the directors.
Funny, I, Anna was one of the two that sounded possibly interesting, along with the Hungarian film Isztambul. Though it's hard to tell too much from a 3 or 4 sentence summary.
Here's the list of 10 films competing for the New Asian Talent Award
It's good to see two Indian films here and one in the main competition.
I'm not sure about inclusion in other years, but China often has a simmering distrust of India, and everything official here has a political component.

Cannes winners added to main post. After Berlin's snubbing of "Tabu" Cannes keeps up the tradition of completely shutting out its biggest critical success from the awards ceremony.

Re: 2012 Film Festival Awards
Looks like mostly plausible guesses, but I can't imagine the effects work on these two being finished in time. It sounds like Gravity has a long ways to go. They are both mega-budgeted, effects-heavy American studio films, so they may forgo the festival circuit altogether.puxzkkx wrote:Now that Cannes is finished I’m gonna geek out and make my totally NGNG 3-month-in-advance predictions for the Venice Competition lineup:

Others that seem likely to turn up somewhere on the fall festival circuit are Low Life (James Gray), The Impossible (Juan Antonio Bayona), and The Bling Ring (Sofia Coppola). Malick's always a wild card too.
EDIT: The new director of the fest is claiming he expects to get the Malick and P.T. Anderson films.

Thanks for reminding me! I actually wrote the Competition selection out in my master list the other day but completely forgot to post it here. I'll do that now.
I don't know how I feel about this Biennale news... Venice without a bunch of obscure, badly-reviewed filler and superfluous Oscarbait just isn't Venice.
