Escort Over Tiger Hill (Wong Sing Loy, 1969)

#1 Post by feihong »

I've been trying to see this movie forever, basically. All I can find online is a very small poster image for the movie.

But just recently I saw David Bordwell's blog entry on Hong Kong films done in widescreen ratios. There's not just an image and a reference to it; there's a sequence of images:

Where could these caps have been taken from? Is there a dvd of this film somewhere under some alternate name? Anybody know more about the fate of this film?

Knowing Bordwell, directly from a 35mm print.

The caps look very sharp, too, with a lot of depth. That's very frustrating.

Some kind of messed-up 3rd-generation disc of "From the Highway" has shown up in some markets, so I keep hoping to see these rare movies.

Everything outside of Shaw and Golden Harvest is in a pretty awful state. Believe me, I've been trying to dig up some of these films for the '70s project, You're best bet is digging around the whole FLK/Kungfucinema community, as it appears that at least some people there have seen it.

And if we're talking about the FuSubs version, I don't think From the Highway is bad at all. Widescreen, Mandarin, English Subs... that's a home run in the world of martial-arts film collectors. Heck, even the camcorder version is pretty good (and does have stronger colors).

Of course, Panorama owns the right to the Cathay library, so even if they're released on DVD, they'll likely be pan-and-scan.

This has recently become available on DVD reissued in Taiwan by Roker Records. However DVD is region 3. You can purchase this via yesasia.com or on eBay as there is a seller selling these Cathay reissues there. Hope this helps as I too had been looking for this movie for years!

It does look fun.

These prints need to be on Blu-ray and dvd, so everyone can see them!

Anyone know if this DVD as English subs? YesAsia claims it doesn't, but their information isn't always 100% accurate.

I believe Hoker DVDs frequently have English Subtitles, but not all of them do.
