Um, the next Eli Roth film is a del Toro-lite family horror picture starring Jack Black and Cate Blanchett and the trailer is here.

And uh... what a title...

A title very much in line with those awful Italian "House" horrors of the 80s that I'm sure Roth loves

Not a fan of Roth in the least, but when I was a child, I adored the John Bellairs book this is based on. Along with The Gashleycrumb Tinies and the original credits of MYSTERY!, it solidified my love of Edward Gorey as well.

Well this might be the first Roth film I'm able to tolerate on any level. Hostel was incredibly popular at my High School and I have absolutely no love for it. It was one of the most appalling experiences I've ever had watching something.

I enjoyed the book as well, and I probably liked its follow-up, The Figure in the Shadows, even more (I barely remember The Letter, the Witch and the Ring - the final book in the trilogy - though). Count me in as well for being highly skeptical of Roth being at them helm with this material. Subtlety has never been his forte.

This was cute, if that’s the right word for it. 95% of the enjoyment here is in watching Cate Blanchett have an absolute ball chewing scenery— like Charlize Theron in A Million Ways to Die in the West, the question of what a big name is doing in a strange genre film is answered by watching them have a lively time on-screen. Beyond Blanchett and some of Jack Black’s performance, the rest is standard issue but competent. This one is surprisingly intense for PG, though— I think some sorcery is afoot here, this is legit a big budget kids film about satanic blood rites, demonic summoning, &c, not Milo and Otis! Also, there are way too many bathroom jokes here— is there like an exec in every studio whose only job is making sure something shits, farts, and/or pees in every movie made for kids?
