Watched this in theaters. It was as cold and miserable outside as it felt on screen, an experience duplicated in The Grey, Carnahan's other great movie. One of the points raised when this came out, other than the comparison made to The French Connection (Friedkin's praise of this was very apt) reviews cited, is that this was the best Ray Liotta had been since Goodfellas. I think this was better, he just had a more threatening and real presence in this that is ably complimented by the other performances in this movie.

This and The Grey are such outliers in Carnahan's filmography. Given Carnahan started with, and has mostly confined himself to making, big, loud, juvenile films about shouty, emotionally stunted people, where did these two slower, meditative, emotionally mature films come from? It'd be like Michael Bay twice, randomly, putting out a couple of slower, more thoughtful films about loss, grief, and confronting death, before going back to more Transformers movies. It's weird. You just don't expect something of that depth and maturity from someone who prefers by and large to make movies with none. And I like Carnahan's immature stuff like Smokin' Aces or Boss Level or even Stretch; I like the manic, desperate, knife-edge style Carnahan usually does. I wish he had an easier time getting films made (he seems to have a lot of integrity, but it means he leaves studio projects frequently and easily) But, yeah, this is as effective a noirish cop drama as I've seen, and The Grey is a great old school adventure film with surprising sensitivity (but absolutely no idea how wolves behave). There are two Joe Carnahans; I wonder when the thoughtful one will make a movie again.

It appears their deal with Paramount is currently US only. That could change, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.
