Eight Men Out: 20th Anniversary Edition

This was always one of my faves of John Sayles' films. 'Bout time it got the SE treatment...

MGM Home Entertainment has announced a 20th Anniversary edition of Eight Men Out which stars John Cusack, Charlie Sheen, and Christopher Lloyd. This John Sayles directed sporting drama will be available to own from the 18th March, and should retail at around $14.98. Extras will include an audio Commentary from director John Sayles, a 2 Part Retrospective featurette, a Story Behind The Movie featurette that takes an in-depth look at the Black Sox Scandal, and a DB, The Bat & The 2005 World Series featurette thats looks at the 2005 White Sox World Series Championship.

The extras look like fluff, but I'm sure this will be worth it for the Sayles commentary. The cover art is a little "much" though.

Just in time for Opening Day

John is a Director who has always understood the merits and appeal of DVDs, so I'm looking forward to his commentary.

D.B. Sweeney's name has been misspelled. The font used fo text looks a bit cheapo, too. I wonder if this is just a temporary cover for promotional purposes only? In any case, a great film that has deserved a new transfer and Sayles commentary for years.

This disc is a great deal; I got it for under $10 and it has over an hour and a half of quality featurettes (I was dubious, but they were all well worth the time). Haven't gotten to the Sayles commentary (the featurettes were enough for me, I think), but if you're at all interested in the film/the history behind it, then this is a can't-miss purchase.

Got a chance to watch this disc tonight and I was glad to revisit one of my favorite baseball films. Great cast too - I had forgotten Richard Edson was involved. The only thing that bothered me is how awful and washed out the transfer gets for the final ten minutes. Is it the same way on way on the previous edition?

That's a deliberate effect expressing how some of the innocence and spirit of the game has been lost, not a transfer defect. It was the same on the previous disc.

Really? It just looks like Sayles turned up the contrast. Anyway, good to know that it's intentional and not a goof on transfer.
